Spielberg had constant problems with the mechanical shark. The salt water of Nantucket Sound really did a number on it. As a result, he played up the dread, brief encounters, and the barrels being pulled more than he had planned. Thus, those problems may have actually enhanced the emotional impact, especially since the shark was not all that realistic and long scenes with it may have looked pretty lame.
