BBC News Link. Not really "sad" news, as he was old as time itself - but a legend of literature none the less.
I almost died of boredom trying to read Franny and Zooey and Catcher In The Rye. Still it is good news that the artcle says it was natural causes so hopefully not a long time suffering thing just a quick exit.
I read everything that I came across ... The Catcher in the Rye, Nine Stories, Franny and Zooey, Raise High the Roofbeam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction and finally, Hapworth 16, 1924. I loved his writing. It was one of the great enthusiasms of my teen years. The good news is that there are supposed to be quite a number of unpublished manuscripts that may soon see light of day. I wonder, though, if he won't seem dated now. (It seems to be a bad time for nonagenarian American writers. Louis Auchincloss died two days ago at age 92. Very different from Salinger, he wrote for six decades about the upper reaches of New York society.)
I tried reading Catcher in the Rye, but I ust couldn't get past page 40 or so. I hated it. Still, it's always at least a bit sad when anyone dies.
He's finally dead, the goddamn phony!!! Wonder if he left any novels behind worth reading? He was said, by his ex wives--to always be writing.
Thwack. Holden ... go to your room. Now!!! I read that there are supposed to be 15-odd "manuscripts" in a safe in his home. Are those novels? I suppose we'll know fairly soon. (Supposedly he had them marked to indicate whether they were publishable "as is" or "needed editing.")
I LOVED Catcher in the Rye. I first read it at 14 and have read it at least 3 times since then. I'll have to dig out my tattered old copy I think it's sad when anyone dies. I'm sure for his loved ones 91 seemed far too soon. :frown1:
He was said to be a very difficult husband, father, and lover. Manipulative, obsessive, and somewhat paranoid. FWIW.
 A very fitting tribute to one of my favorite authors. Loved his work, particularly The Catcher in the Rye.
Oh no, I loved his work! Absolutely adored the Catcher in the Rye and Franny and Zooey was an interesting read, albeit extremely heavy. I was just telling someone last weekend at the bookstore that he was still alive.:frown1:
