remotehypnosis: Somewhere between soft and hard. For me I think of it as the normal hard state, because beyond the hardest you have ever seen your penis get you know it can get even harder and larger. The thing to avoid is any pain because that could be warning you are causing too much pressure.

hungteen02...most men will notice less "excitement" over time as they jelq.
It's almost like the penis becomes more tolerant of the "workouts" and the urge to climax diminishes. The time it takes to get to this stage will vary of course from man to man. After several sessions, things should get "better" ;)

The degree of hardness IS important and the rigid "rock hard" erection quality is what you would want to avoid. Such a state (of highly engorged penis tissue) puts a man in the state of NOT recognizing injury until it's too late when jelqing. Typically, blood vessel tearing (and subsequent bruising) and sub-skin surface "damage" occurs (when too hard!) which then requires recovery time (i.e. healing over several days.) Breaking crucial veins too, can occur within the penis shaft when attempting jelq while "rock hard". The best "semi-hard quality" is a stage somewhere between semi and just BEFORE total hard strength. Practicing jelq will enable a man to "know" when his penis is at the right level of erection to safely do the jelq maneuvers. So, a "too-hard shaft" is wrong and of course, a limpy, flaccid state is pointless to perform jelq. The jelq procedure itself takes advantage of the trapped blood within the shaft and "forces it" into compressed spaces within the erecitle tissues (for short durations) which over time will encourage expansion to eventually hold more blood (hence, a bigger size).
Remember jelq seems to enhance girth more than length improvement!

The only "pain" from jelq should be a feeling of the penis tissue being well worked over, tired, and perhaps a bit "stingy- sore" at worst....and left "puffy" in appearance. (This subsides after an hour or so).

It's always important too, as other threads have noted in this section, to incorporate warm compresses (even warm showers help) before and after jelq sessions to encourage optimum blood flow into the penis tissues which you're gradually developing through jelq.
