I met Jeremy Piven at Florida DisneyWorld the night before the start of Gay Days in 1998. He was nursing a drink at one of the disco bars on Pleasure Island (I found out later the bartender was a friend of his). He looked sad and a little depressed, I’m guessing because Ellen had recently been canceled. He also definitely looked a little worse for wear – he was dressed in blue jeans, a white T-shirt, his thinning hair was all messed up, and he was sporting about five days worth of unshaven stubble… but he was still hot.
The bar was almost empty (it was still early – about 9 PM or so). The bar was kind of U shaped, and I was maybe 10 to 15 feet from him around the curve. More than once he saw me looking at him, but I was trying to respect his privacy while at the same time trying to figure out whether to walk over to him and say hello when all of a sudden “Last Dance” started playing. Something distracted me and I looked away for a moment and when I looked back, he was no longer there. Well, fuck, I thought to myself, that’s disappointing.
So I get up off my barstool to leave… and there he is standing right next to me giving me a little smirk. He leans in towards me and says in that sexy deep voice of his “i love this song. You wanna dance?” And I’m like, um duh!! So we make our way to the dance floor, and we’re dancing, and he’s not really looking at me, but he sort of is, and it was very, very weird. And before I know it the song is over, and he kind of leans in toward me and grabs the back of my head to pull me towards him so that he can say in my ear “thanks for the dance, man” and he gives me a sweet little kiss on my right cheek, and then he’s gone before I could say anything. I just stood there in the middle of that tiny dance floor, stunned, for what felt like a what felt like an eternity but probably wasn’t more than a few seconds, grinning like an idiot.
And that was my weird but delightful encounter with Jeremy Piven at Gay Days 1998. I still remember it like it happened yesterday.
