In Australia ( to my knowledge) men don't wear Jockstraps.

What is the purpose of them?

I don't understand why you have the back open... (Not talking about for sexual reasons, purely on the sports field)

Why?

are you from australia? have you been to a sports goods store there? Like Rebel Sport...? i know they play cricket there and there are a good many places to get a cricket box (cup)....which comes in a jock usually.

the straps in the back concentrate the support on the pouch. it's physics. without the straps, with material the support would be spread out along the pouch and backside, reducing the intended effect. compare to a woman's bra for exampe. the back and shoulder straps concentrate the support on the two cups, since that's where its needed. jockstraps were invented before spandex and compression shorts were around.

I wouldn't say i wear a jockstrap either. I use it. the same way I'd use a helmet, protective pads, gloves. once the need for it is finished it comes off and goes into a bag or the wash. and i don't know many men who wear jockstraps as underwear either.

i guess it's a different way of thinking about it.

they are nice to wear under walking shorts on a hot humid day. Nice to wear under jeans when you have a pair of jeans that are well fit to your body. Nice to wear when you are feeling a little "saucy" hehehe fun all around. Every guy should have a couple.

The purpose is to keep your junk from flopping around during vigorous activity. Nobody had even thought of briefs when the jock was invented They wanted a pouch to put their balls in and they needed a way to secure the pouch to their body. The waist band and leg straps was the easiest way to get this done. Now there are briefs and other garments which almost replace the jockstrap. It is now a matter of comfort and taste. I can find briefs which provide great support but my stocky build causes the to ride up in the back or the wasitband to slide down in the back when I move. The jockstrap seems to solve these problems for me. They can also be a bit cooler in hot weather.

I think it's a great, simple design, though yes, maybe a little old fashioned.

It does the job of supporting during vigorous exercise, although, these days support briefs seem to be good enough...

They do still sell them in some sports shops in the UK, but some don't. I once asked about them and the assistant treated me like I was very strange... But as I say, other shops do have them.

I wear them at my gym and a few people do look at me oddly, but a few of the other men do wear them too. It might make a difference that some of them do know I'm gay...

But I like to think I just look like a good athlete

Yeah we don't use them in Aus but they are sold.

???

That must make it economically questionable for the shops / stores ?

If people don't use/wear them, what do they do ?

I'm having a vision of people putting them on those half-manequins you see in some shops, with just waist and butt and thighs, and sticking them on the mantelpiece over the fireplace ... :biggrin1:

I agree that it is an old design, but old fashioned? Given the functional requirements, what changes would you make to update the jock strap?

Fill in the butt I guess. Like pants.

I think that's what most people see as the key difference, in terms of social / fashion thinking. But I agree, functionally and logically, it's fine.

And as I say, I do wear them and I think they're great.

Please don't treat me like I'm some kind of anti-jock-ist ...

prevents hernia by holding up the balls
prevents getting hit in the balls by holding the cup in place
newer designs are compression shorts with or without cup
asian countries dont use them, just briefs
they dont have much to support
countries where there is alot of junk flopping will use them

A load of BS. Ya they hold cups but that is it. They definatly do not prevent hernia as hernia (though causes pain in the testicles) is not caused by testicles. We have some of the most violent and risky sports here in ireland. Hurling, Gaelic football and rugby handball etc. and no one wears jock straps.

I think they are a homoerotic symbol for americans. It seems they are only popular in societies that are extremely sexually repressed. Especially homosexually repressed

Kind of like the skirts worn in your kneck of the woods. What do you call them, kilts?
