I think the reason for attention is similar to the reason people slow down to look at an accident, you know it's not the right thing to do but the drama seems to be irresistible. I know that despite our intentions on warning people away by calling him out, for some the attention will be just the thing that draws them in.
As for why so many people send money to an obvious liar and fraud, that is truly confounding to me. Imagine what a danger it would be if people were equally gullible when it came to electing, financing, and defending top political leaders who were blatant compulsive liars and lifelong scam artists that clearly had nothing but their self-interest in mind. /s
