While I am proudly out, and would love for all gay people (including athletes and other celebrities) to come out, I don't judge those who aren't publicly out. You never know 2 things: 1- If they are in fact out, but have never made a great spectacle about it (US College football player Michael Sam was fully out to the people on his team, friends, and family, but it did not become common knowledge until he interviewed with a reporter), and 2- What the consequences for them would be if they came out. The first and most important way a gay person contributes to a healthy gay community is to be happy and successful in their own lives. They don't "owe" something to the rest of us, any more than we owe something to them. Would I come out publicly if I were a top level athlete? I think so. But I'm not one, so we'll never know for sure.
