The lesson of all this is that conservatives are also delicate little snowflakes, and we must always think of their precious, precious feelings lest we make them cry. Apparently this isn't just a left-wing thing now, it's an American thing. And while we're not there yet, thankfully, we are headed down the road to being just like the people in the jihadist countries we condemn: ritualistically responding to anything the least bit "offensive" with manufactured outrage.
The First Amendment means that public figures -- politicians most of all -- are fair game. We are *supposed* to be able to say offensive things about them, mock them, even make distasteful jokes about them meeting violent ends. Nothing is more American.
