It wouldn't do anything like that to your accent. If he grew up in the UK he'd have a UK accent. He doesn't.

He obviously moved to the UK as an adult (or possibly older adolescent).

The reason why the other person probably hears similarities to an American accent is because American English (and pronunciation) is predominantly what is taught. The key tell in his pronunciation is "sweaty" the "ea" vowel sound is nothing like what someone from the UK, specifically London, would produce.
