Not specifically Kenny Roger's silvery mane and beard, nor his white suit, nor even his gold jewelry - but the premise of the lyrics of his song Lady. Does the idea of a guy dedicating his life to you turn you on? Is the idea that a fella is lost without you hot? Are you attracted to the idea that you make a man "whole"?

The song was a huge hit back in the 1970s...so I know there was a sizable list of subscribers to the notion of his manly dedication, but does this still hold true for the 20-teens?

Ladies, if a guy were to express the feelings Kenny does in this song...and assuming he was sincere...would it be a total turn on...or a turn off?

    Just for reference...the lyrics are:

Lady, I'm your knight in shining armor and I love you
You have made me what I am and I am yours
My love, there's so many ways I want to say I love you
Let me hold you in my arms forever more

You have gone and made me such a fool
I'm so lost in your love
    And oh, we belong together
Won't you believe in my song?

Lady, for so many years I thought I'd never find you
You have come into my life and made me whole
Forever let me wake to see you each and every morning
Let me hear you whisper softly in my ear

In my eyes I see no one else but you
There's no other love like our love
And yes, oh yes, I'll always want you near me
I've waited for you for so long

Lady, your love's the only love I need
And beside me is where I want you to be
'Cause, my love, there's somethin' I want you to know
You're the love of my life, you're my lady!

I like the "caught in a wind tunnel" look his eye surgery has created.

    Birds of a feather, bro.

He has been kinda older looking for as long as I've known...odd that he would try to look young.

As a guy, I wonder if women really want what he's crooning about...or is it just a charming old romantic notion.

As a guy, the idea of being all those things to someone scares the fuck out of me.

    *raises hand* I want...

Of course it's scary, it's supposed to be scary and freaking insane to love someone that much. In my opinion it should always feel like that if both people love each other and they are BOTH giving their all.

Realistically:frown1: (have to throw that word in there) the chance of finding someone like that is slim. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, the idea of it is wonderful. I can't speak for every woman, but when I watched the Notebook, Dear John, Message in a Bottle, Nights in Rodanthe etc with friends the whole theatre seemed to be in tears. Obviously there are a lot of people in the world that still be a love like that is possible.

I am an optimist and believe that, while rare, love like that exists. However, I have a song that is closer to my heart in regards to what I want.

    Undisclosed Desires - Muse

    I know you suffered
But I don't want you to hide
    It's cold and loveless
I won't let you be denied

    Soothe me
    I'll make you feel pure
    Trust me
    You can be sure

I want to reconcile the violence in your heart
I want to recognize your beauty is not just a mask
I want to exorcise the demons from your past
I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart

You trick your lovers that you're wicked and divine
    You may be a sinner
    But your innocence is mine

    Please me
    Show me how it's done
    Tease me
    You are the one

I want to reconcile the violence in your heart
I want to recognize your beauty is not just a mask
I want to exorcise the demons from your past
I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart

    Please me
    Show me how it's done
    Trust me
    You are the one

I want to reconcile the violence in your heart
I want to recognize your beauty is not just a mask
I want to exorcise the demons from your past
I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart

It's only a turn-on if it's reciprocal. That's a deeply romantic song and I do believe that that kind of romance and depth of feeling is possible. But in reality, that kind of romance is hollow without the day to day reality that draws two people together. The words in that song would only hold meaning for me once I am deep in a relationship with someone I love - after we're gone through some life together.

Romance aside, real love is scary - it's jumping off a cliff into the unknown, but at least you're jumping while holding hands with someone.

    Me too!

Personally I find the song words too much. Too needy, too soppy. I like to know that I'm important to someone, but I also like to know that they have an existence outside of me.

An ex of mine used to write stuff like that for me, and while I loved him intensely, the extent of his love for me freaked me out.

Perhaps he was trying to make amends for lyrics like:

She's leavin' now 'cause I just heard the slammin' of the door
The way I know I've heard it slam one hundred times before
And if I could move I'd get my gun and put her in the ground
    Oh Ruby
Don't take your love to town

In Kenny Rogers defense, I think Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town was an old Vietnam war song originally written by Mel Tillis.

Personally, I think the lyrics are particularly banal. But, I have to say that I've many times written songs for women...and they don't really care what the words say. They love that a man has felt so strongly that he's written a song for them.
