Kewl thread MR! I'm a big fan of nails ^^

Do you have acrylics or natural?
Natural

How long do you like to keep them?
They're a little shorter than yours are. I've had this horrible horrible nailpolish a little while back that totally damaged them (even though I always! use base coat). They keep chipping/peeling/flaking off now, but once the nail has grown past where the nail polish has been should be fine again :)
Also I have one nail (my index finger) that just doesn't want to grow very long, it's a lot less strong than the others (on both hands).

What do you do to maintain healthy hands?
My hands don't dry out easily, even after I've done dishes or something like that. So I don't have to do a lot about them. After showering I do use the body shop body lotion (spiced vanilla... hmmm ^^) so then I use it on my hands too.

Do you have a product or polish you couldn't live without?
Essence studio nails 24/7 nail base. It's suuuupercheap and the best base coat I ever had. My nail polish stays on much longer with it, and gives a really smooth nail surface.

How often do you have a manicure done (yourself or done by someone else doesn't matter)
Eh... I'm a big fan of nails. About every 2 days, just because I want a different colour. I looooove that bright colours are totally in right now! The fact that I have 21 opened nail polishes right now says enough? :p They go from bright yellow to pastel pink to sparkly dark blue to pastel green to a simple french or bright red nail polish. Yay for nail polish!! ^^

Black with gold sparkly nail polish in this pic: Hand pic!

How long do you usually spend on your nails?
When I'm doing a manicure, base coat - first coat - second coat - top coat, it usually takes about an hour and half to 2 hours. (But a lot of that is drying process and I do useful things in between!)
I also try to do it in the early evening, so my nail polish can dry a little before I go to sleep and then can harden well during the night (so there's no chipping in it). I HATE doing my nails when I have to go out and then ruining them with my keys when I'm locking the door -_- always! happens.

I believe that my vitamin and supplement regimen and my diet are responsible for my nail health. I not only take multivitamins but a lot of other supplements, including cod liver oil and EFAs/DHA oils, which I believe are related to nail health, and antioxidants like NAC. We spend a lot of money on vitamins and supplements. A few times I've become too busy to take my vitamins and supplements regularly, I have noticed that my nails become thinner so that there's this obvious banding as my nails grow out of thinner nails after the thicker healthier nails. I buff them smooth but I pay attention to when it seems like my nails are showing that my body is under more stress. Mysteriously, I don't always get banding on all my nails at once. There will be a dramatic groove on my right big toe but no obvious difference on my left big toe, for example. My big toes have the thickest nails, so variations in thickness show up the most on them.

Those are pretty nails in the nail porn, but too long for me. I think that length would begin to interfere with my ability to do things like type and masturbate.

Did you use the nail polish that requires two things to be mixed together to create a hard shell of varnish on your nails? The U/V polish? Those can mess up your nails. I love your nail routine. Check out Never Enough Nails: China Glaze Poolside Collection (Flip flop fantasy is the color I own and it's very bright. You might like it.

Masturbation would be difficult but I use the Magic Wand anyway. Hand masturbation would be impossible. I cant do much of it even now. I'd like to eventually have mine that long. We shall see if I can still wipe my ass. LOL

Ry also has nail beds that show if he's been sick based on the thickness and ridges that grow out. If he was stressed out at his job for a season, it shows.

Also included in my post is another photo of the pink manicure I did today. If anyone wants to know how to do it. Paint a white nail ridge filler on tips only (two coats if needed) you don't want them too white or else they look fake. I use Nail Life's Hide Ridges because it's the most opaque. Then add a few drops of bright red nail polish to a bottle of clear nail polish for the perfect clear pink. Paint the pink over the nail (minus the tips you just painted white) and the pink and white will have a good contrast.

I'm smitten with this thread!

Very nice hands Miss Femme ;)
What is a satin hands treatment?

I learned it in Mary Kay. I used this scrub mixed with cleanser & a strong moisturizor. Then I just use this moisturizor mixed with water and sleep with the gloves. It's unbelievable.

How long do you like to keep them?

The shortest they get is about how long yours are now. I had them significantly longer but recently broke one, so the rest had to get shorter to match.

What do you do to maintain healthy hands?

Err . . . you're supposed to do something? I put some gunk on them once a week or so. It's this stuff. I wash them often. Does that count?

Do you have a product or polish you couldn't live without?

A nail file. Any nail file. I just can't stand having a sharp, ragged nail.

How often do you have a manicure done (yourself or done by someone else doesn't matter)

I've never had a professional one done. I change the colour on mine about once a week because Sir requires it. Six months ago I would have answered this with 'I've never had one done or done one'. I'm a newbie to nails.

How long do you usually spend on your nails?
Much too long!!! I know I'm putting the polish on too thick, but can't seem to do it thinner. It takes me many hours over the course of two days. If I do more than three coats in a day or add a layer after 8pm, I can guarantee I'll get bed-marks. On the second day I spend hours cleaning up all the bits I got on my skin. So maybe 4 or 5 hours times two?

I have no idea why there are only three fingers in the pic . I took it a week or two ago to show Sir my new, shorter nails after the big breakage.

Thank you much! Pretty hands on a pretty lady! ;)

Alright, so I just got done doing a bunch of poking around on the internet becauuuse... the tips of my nails periodically seem to flake/peel. I only ever use my rose crystal nail file. Internet said to get a nail buffer. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for in a nail buffer? Rough estimate of price range?

Secondly, my nails have never been very strong/resilient. Do things like the Sally Hansen: Hard as Nails work? I don't recall a noticeable change when I was taking a multivitamin every day (I don't really drink milk or milk substitutes like soy-milk for the vitamin D either). Reading says moisturize more, take Vitamin B biotin supplements, and drink lots of water (which I already do, thankfully).

My nails are horrible. I've had a nail biting habit for about 25 years. I've been able to quit so many bad habits, can't seem to kick that one though. As soon as they get long enough to bite, they are bitten. My cuticles are shit too. Lol. I think they are a lost cause.

I try to see my manicurist every two weeks and I get acrylic. I like my nails to always look good and don't have the time or skill to maintain them myself. I want to try the gel nail polish for my next pedicure and see if it can last as long as my manicures.

I have atrocious nails. Paper thin, ridgy, splitty... crappy. I don't want to pay for acrylics and I seldom find someone to shape them properly anyway (I HATE it when they flare out from the end of a finger. bleh). Sally Hansen products actually do work. I can't remember the name but there's one in a gold bottle that did wonders when I used it. I just can't be bothered to put that much effort into them. I tried gel polish a few weeks ago and LOVED it. My nails bend too much to keep regular nail polish on for more than a day or two. It just flakes off. This stuff stays put. I just bought a UV lamp and polish and do it myself now. Once every 10 days or so and my nails look infinitely better than than ever have. I've never been able to get them to grow past then end of my finger until I started using this stuff. I busted my index fingernail yesterday but here's a pic anyway.
