I have atrocious nails. Paper thin, ridgy, splitty... crappy. I don't want to pay for acrylics and I seldom find someone to shape them properly anyway (I HATE it when they flare out from the end of a finger. bleh). Sally Hansen products actually do work. I can't remember the name but there's one in a gold bottle that did wonders when I used it. I just can't be bothered to put that much effort into them. I tried gel polish a few weeks ago and LOVED it. My nails bend too much to keep regular nail polish on for more than a day or two. It just flakes off. This stuff stays put. I just bought a UV lamp and polish and do it myself now. Once every 10 days or so and my nails look infinitely better than than ever have. I've never been able to get them to grow past then end of my finger until I started using this stuff. I busted my index fingernail yesterday but here's a pic anyway.

Nice and I love, love the ring! Where on earth did you get it? I have big hands and can pull off big rings and that one is definitely my style. I love it!

Believe it or not... TJ Maxx :p It was $23 lol SCORE! I've never seen anything else like it.

Seriously??? Damn, I love it! Even my friends know I love stuff like that.
They can pick out my style anywhere - catalogues, home parties, Mexico etc. And when I show up wearing it? No surprise. I'm so predictable!

The UV polish is great stuff if you have splitty thin nails that are flexible and crack the polish up and make it flake off faster. That's a good option. It also gives the nail a lot of reinforcement too.

As for the acrylics, I hated getting them done for the same reason. Those duck feet nails look HORRID. I would ask who does the best nails in the salon and book an appointment with that person. I always did this with good results. And tell her I wanted oval shaped nails. Then when I got home I filed them even more the way I liked them. When you go in for a fill they can't change your nail shape entirely at that point and they end up staying the way you like them until you take them off.

Hope this helps!

Sorry to post three posts back to back but I found this great new nail polish color yesterday that takes me back to the 1980s. I love it, it's demure and subdued but not to be underestimated. It's Loreal's Mauvelous. It reminds me of what a secretary in the 80s would have worn. Here's a picture of it on my hands.

Do you have acrylics or natural?
Currently: Acrylic (I go between...but I do like the acrylic nails) Love bright colors, and I like to try the classy new colors. Colors I won't use on my fingernails: yellow, black or lime green.

How long do you like to keep them?
I try to keep them about 1/4-1/2 inch past the end of my finger and go for the natural shapes.

What do you do to maintain healthy hands?
I get manicures on a regular basis, and use moisturizing lotion with cocoa butter daily, and wash my hands often, several times during the day.

Do you have a product or polish you couldn't live without?
If I had to, I could do without my nail care routine. Wouldn't want to, and don't have to, but there is nothing I "couldn't live without".

How often do you have a manicure done (yourself or done by someone else doesn't matter)
Every two weeks... my indulgence

Feel free to add anything else you'd like to or ask questions and I'm sure others can chime in and answer or ask you questions based on your responses.

I do a great deal of typing, housecleaning, as well as gardening and yard work. Gloves are a must. I don't go for the full nail designs on all digits, but occasionally, I will put a nice design on one finger or large toenail. I like fun, pretty nails. My husband LOVES them.

Attached are a couple of my favorite nails.

PS. MMR... that's a beautiful color... LOVE IT~!

Natural

Right now they are pretty short. I've had them as long as MR's picture, With lots of acrylic help but it didn't last long. :( I can't really even file to shape them, they disintegrate into stubs. My nails are strong but thin if that makes sense. I've had several nail salons try to shape my natural nail and upon filing them to get a good shape, they filed down as if they were clipped and it was unintentional on the nail tech's part. I've had the same success when attempting this on my own. I just clip them down now, I give up. They are what they are. Unexciting, I know.

What do you do to maintain healthy hands?
Wash my hands, keep my nails clipped and clean them on a daily basis, I only do cuticle oil when I'm feeling like I need something extra to make myself feel more girly but usually I just use Bath and Body Works lotion after my showers.

Do you have a product or polish you couldn't live without?
Clear coat nail polish, no preference on brand as long as I have some and a pretty red or french manicure to go on the toes. I don't paint my finger nails, the paint always chips off too fast even with finishing coats. I'm just not that good with them I guess.

My ex used to demand that I go get them done bi weekly for his own pleasure. Now I never get them done ever.

I can see why you wouldn't want go back if he was demanding of you. My husband never makes demands, but I can tell what he likes. My biweekly trips to the salon actually started b/c I have ingrown toenails on both of my big toes. Even after trips to the podiatrist, they were still in poor shape and hurt.

I went to the salon for a pedicure and they said, "give us a year, come in every two wks, it won't cost as much as the podiatrist - which was true - and let us take care of your toenails." They were correct. In less than 6 months they were 90% better than what they were when I started. My husband and I were so pleased that mani/pedis have become part of our "discretionary" spending that we include in our budget.

They did amazing things with my toes!

Wait - what is this gel polish??? Someone mentioned something to me about buying a lamp the other week but I was holding my friends crying baby and couldn't really absorb what they were saying. If it stays on I like the sound of it!

gel nail polish goes over natural nails. It is not an acrylic but it does "seal" the nail.

I had it on my nails when I had my acrylics removed b/c I wanted something to protect my nails temporarily. It is true! The polish stayed on much longer.... 3 wk on my nails. But when I went to have them changed, it was almost as tough as having acrylics removed.

here is a good article to read up on them.

Natural

How long do you like to keep them?
As short as possible. I hate them going over the ends of my fingers

What do you do to maintain healthy hands?
I cut my nails and I wash my hands with soap when needed

Do you have a product or polish you couldn't live without?
Soap

How often do you have a manicure done (yourself or done by someone else doesn't matter)
I had it done once when I was doing school work experience at a beauty salon and ended up failing my grade 7 violin exams due to it.

I never wear gloves or anything while cleaning the house or whatever. I just wash with generic soap maybe 30+ times a day.

In a heartbeat. Here's my crystal nail file. I had to go out and buy one after you mentioned yours. ;)

Was home today working on a project and took a break while the show "The Dr's" were on. They said that an emery board was a bad thing. Something about retaining old cells that could pass on bacteria and ailments.

They recommended a metal file because it could be washed. I would assume that the crystal ones would fall under this criteria also

I assume it's because of all the protein and supplements that I take, but my fricken nails grow way too fast . Why is it that I get plagued with what most women would want?? lol

btw, as I was reading, I was going to compliment MR on how pretty her nails were, then Scarlet posted hers, and I thought "Wow, those are pretty too. Then LaFemme posted, and then.......
Suffice it to say, ALL of you have some very, very pretty nails!! (can you tell it's one of my weaknesses?)

This is a pretty color! I like it. Love the shape too.

I had a hard time finding a nail salon I liked up here, but finally found a great shop. I don't do the acrylic nails, but I like my nails to look pretty and my nails were also always so thin after wearing the acrylics. So I found a great place and they suggested some of the things you all did for helping with thin, brittle nails. I go to the salon regularly now, every 2 weeks for a touch up, and I love the way my hands feel. I even had a finger that was crushed in a door as a child -- the finger is fine -- the nail always grew in looking odd to me. The girl who does my nails said it was the nail-bed that was damaged and has been slowly getting that nail to grow in better. Amazing really, since I was always so self conscious of that hand.

For me, going to the salon is my one thing for myself. that and sexy undies.
