Lena Horne, Singer And Actress, Dies At 92

One of America's legendary entertainers, singer and actress Lena Horne, died Sunday in New York City. She was 92. In a career that spanned 60 years, Horne broke barriers for African-Americans in film and television, as well as on stages from Las Vegas to Broadway. It was a career that began with frustration and ended in triumph.

I remember meeting her at several parties in New York City back in the 80's. At the first party we attended, we each smiled at one another. Several weeks later, we encountered each other again, and, exchanged a few words at a punch bowl. As I ladled her a cup of punch, she whispered to me, "This woman pays more than the one you escorted last time. You do realize that most of the women here know what you do for a living". We both smiled at that. I whispered back that it is good advertising. "No, dear", she countered. "That big bulge in the pants of your tux is good advertising".

At that, we smiled, clinked glasses, and, parted.

That was one of my favorite memories from working parties in Manhattan.
