Lenten Abstinence

Lent is, as some of you will know, a season of abstinence and fasting.

I've never liked fasting, so this year I've decided to try and see if I can last for the 40 days WITHOUT any form of sexual release :biggrin1:

Anyone else ever tried this before? Would love to hear from anyone else with similar experiences :smile:

Fortunately, "some" of us are unfettered by archaic and punitive religious rituals. However, that is not to say I don't support your right to "indulge" yourself as much as you want 100%. Just don't take out any resulting frustration and crankiness on innocent victims, such as children, animals, and those of us who express our spirituality differently than you.

Maybe there's a market for some "Happy no whacking off!" greeting cards. I'll get back to you on that. Cheers.

Wow, me too. Don't give into the wanking! I hope I'll be able to hold out, I'm also trying not to look at porn during Lent. Oh and yes this is totally like that Seinfeld episode, some2 vs Autofellatio see who can hold out, lol.

Midlifebear is rught in that it is of no use giving up something for lent and just being cranky around others. A big part of the importance of Lent is letting this extra tension into your life and dealing with it in a mature and healthy way. I suppose that in this way lent kind of prepares us for times when other unwanted tension is thrown into our lives.

About the abstinence thing - I'm not doing it for the religious thing. I'm doing it as a kind of experiment to see just how long I can abstain from being a bad boy :biggrin1:

My abstaining just covers self pleasuring - my PE experiments and manscaping will still be going on as normal :tongue:

Yep, I have done the same thing. It is hell on a relationship, but whatever my faults are as a man and as a father, I like to think that I am a good Catholic.

Watch the movie "40 days and 40 nights" with Josh Hartnett. Its about this same topic. He tries to give up sexual release for lent due to some mental and relationship issues.

It should give you hope as he does hold out for the whole 40 days.

OK - that was a reason for Lent - all about control. If you want to abstain, fine.

BUT it's not a sin to use what God has given you. Let's get our heads outside of the bedroom, sex, etc and try to be concerned for each other.

I know some people who have tried to abstain and have been really unchristian to those around them during this time of the year.

I find this to be the most absurd shit. Why not encourage others to be kind, courteous, and charitable rather than have them give up an activity or habit? Further proof too many organized religions want to control their believers.

In the past I have given up chocolate, bagels, ice cream, and beer, for Lent. Okay, beer was not a true sacrifice as I hate beer. :yuck: In recent years I have been a bit more creative and hopefully more meaningful. I have actually tithed 10% of my net income, read the bible daily, meditated for 30 minutes a day, exercised daily, and volunteered. This year I am keeping it simple and traditional; no meat on Fridays.

I once heard a priest say it was much easier to be a good Catholic than a good Christian. If you are married, how does your wife think about you abstaining from sex for 40 days? Or did you just abstain from masturbation?
