I think if she looks enough like a man that there was no way to tell otherwise that the men's change room is the correct choice. If she is undergoing gender reassignment she is required to live as a man and if it's complete, for all intents and purposes, she is a man.

HM, I understand your points about chromosomes but the locker room isn't a place where many birthings happen so I don't think internal organs come into play when selecting where to change clothes. Additionally, what if this person is intersexed? XXY? Ought there to be a third room just for that?

Lastly, if the only clue that this was a female was seeing the rear strap of a sports bra how do we know for a fact that it was a woman? Could be a man just beginning reassignment to female. Could also be as simple as a man with gynocomastica who is very self concious and trying to hide/compress the excess tissue.

On the other side of the coin, you think there may be some possibility that it actually was a man with big boobs? The OP said the ONLY way he "knew" it was a female was the sports bra. Gynecomastia can be caused by a number of things.

I need to type faster.

Or I could save myself the effort by following you around saying, "What he said".

I've got a Jessica Biel pic if you're not fussy about surnames...

 Not fussy at all! Actually in my experience, as arbitrary as a first name might seem, the majority of girls that I know of named "Jessica" and especially "Jennifer" happen to be quite attractive. Local girls too, not just celebrities. Weird, I know...

By the way, I love that Biel pic. It's been around for a while, but it's still great!

I know it's politically incorrect to say so, but you cannot change your gender/sex. I know there are people who are born inter-sexed. I know there are rare exceptions of men with XX chromosomes, women with XY chromosomes, etc. But these people are born that way. You are what you're born. (Hey, why does this "we were born this way" argument work for gays but not for people who claim they change gender/sex?) You cannot change your gender/sex by going under the knife.

I wouldn't want to conflate "gender" and "sex."

Your points are absolutely correct about "sex," henry miller, because "sex" is chromosomally determined, as you say.

But "gender" is a cultural construct that is all about outward performance of what the culture thinks is an appropriate "look" and/or an appropriate "behavior" for males, females, and others. And yes, if you go under the knife (and/or take hormonal treatments to change certain secondary sexual characteristics such as female breasts or the male body hair pattern), you can most definitely change your "gender."

I guess I've spent enough time in unisex facilities in Europe to not be bothered by this. As long as she's unobtrusive about being there I wouldn't give a rat's ass one way or the other.

wow! I learnt me a new word. Thanks NCbear!

I was going to say what Gillette said above: it could be a guy with moobs (possibly due to a medical condition like gynecomastia) who was either wearing the bra to flatten his chest for appearance purposes, or needs to control the bounce for comfort when he's running on a treadmill, etc.

Actually, as modest as some young people in the U.S. are, there could probably be a number people undergoing gender reassignment in locker rooms. What I see is "guys" keeping a t shirt on, changing from jeans to basketball shorts while wearing boxers that they don't remove, coming back, changing and skipping the showers.
Gender reassignment raises a number of interesting issues. Many M2F persons were previously married and have children. If he gets surgical gender reassignment and the couple stays together (it happens) does that make the wife a lesbian? Are the children now living in a lesbian family?
It seems quite probable to me that the individual the OP noticed either is a male who has gynecomastia or is a F2M transexual (who often were always tomboys and like to be and do things with men) undergoing reassignment. If you put yourself in that situation it's pretty easy to begin to see the kind of courage that kind of change calls for.
To those who have further interest, there is a documentary series called "Transgeneration" that is often available at movie rental establishments. It's pretty good at highlighting the dilemmas these indvidual face.
