.......Cranick hadn’t forked over $75 for the subscription fire protection service offered to the county’s rural residents, so when firefighters came out to the scene, they just stood there, with their equipment on the trucks, while Cranick’s house burned to the ground. According to the local NBC TV affiliate, Cranick “said he offered to pay whatever it would take for firefighters to put out the flames, but was told it was too late. They wouldn't do anything to stop his house from burning.”

It used to be like that in the old days too. Not all fire departments are taxpayer-funded, even now, but private firefighting volunteer companies are more usual in small towns, even in my state. It's pretty harsh, but not illegal. Hope he had insurance at least.

as I have stated on other forums, I hope the family sues the holy hell out of the county/city, and the county/city get all of their federal/state funding pulled.

Guess which county is going to have a fully subscribed fire protection service next year.

no kidding. I've honestly never heard of such a thing. I grew up in a rural part of a mostly urban county. I know for a fact that if there were ever a fire (our next door neighbor burned his house down...b/c he didn't like it lol) where we lived, that there would be fire trucks from @ least 2 counties, and if need be, some from the city. What happened in TN was just bullshit politics

That's just it, Una; not all localities have fire departments, and if they want one, it's up to them how they organize it. No federal or state funds apply unless they toe the government's regulation line, and if they want it to be a private service, like the security firms that patrol gated communities, that is their choice.

They stood around to keep the fire from spreading to the property of subscribers.

People seem to be missing the point.

The point is, a form of governing that tolerates such an event is itself intolerable and cannot stand.

Wow. Thats insane. For one of the most advanced countries, some aspects of America are so backwards.

Then again, dont want Socialism creeping in the back door.

This is a tough one for me. Personally, I'd never make the decision to live in a place with a private fire department (or police, for that matter), but thousands of people do make such decisions and live with the consequences.

In my mind, those consequences are brutal and harsh; it's like an ultimate baby/bathwater thing. Pets were lost and a family's homeless. Evidently the family tried to pay on the spot and the fire officials refused; that's the part that grates on me the most. It's especially horrible when considered that the fire fighters probably consider themselves to be Christian.

The form of government that survives on skeletal public services is actually close to the type of minimalism that moistens Teabaggers' panties. Again, I'd never willingly make such a choice in my life, but I'm certain that I've made many choices for myself that most everyone would find deplorable. People living in free societies are allowed to do that.

Well, guys, I do have to say that we're not in the 1700's, but good old Ben Franklin started the first insurance company in Philadelphia with buying insurance policies, which in turn funded the fire brigade. You bought the policy (I have one that cost $5.00, and, incredibly still insures a house in Germantown PA. It was "perpetual", and insured the house for $500.) and along with it came fire protection.
In the rural areas, today, with no fire departments paid for with taxes, (and the tax increase no doubt would have the potential to get the county trustees fired at the next election) how else would you expect to finance the (probably) volunteer department?
If you didn't stand there and watch it burn, as a volunteer, the rest of the county would think it really wasn't necessary to pay the annual fee, and there would be no fire department at all the next year.
I would be willing to bet that the firemen weren't happy about watching a place burn, but I'll bet there was a discussion in the firehouse long before this event, and they probably fought among themselves on making the decision.
There can be no winners in this one.

you guys are missing the point. the town has a publicly funded fire department but an assessment fee of $75 was added several years ago.

in essence this experience points to what life would be like under privatization. pay or die.

BTW - three pets died in the blaze!

Amazing how these wingnuts think that the only "rights" anyone should have are the "rights" that they personally hold valuable. To even mention any other kind of right to them that another person might also value, is to declare yourself a cowardly, lazy, evil, nazi, communist piece of shit who shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Yeah, let's vote for the candidates favored by people who at least in terms of their political ideology, very closely resemble sociopaths.

I live in a township within a larger urban area, and the police force put up for referendum whether they would make us pay per visit! Imagine, if you call 911 they won't come unless you have a hundred dollars to reimburse them! They got shouted down and the measure died, but only after petitions were circulated and council meetings filled with the neighbors. Such things are more and more common. Living on one side of the street or the other could mean the difference between life and death!

^ You do realize I live in Tennessee, right? Not to mention Crescendo, Therarity, as well as some other pretty bright and progressive members who regularly contribute to these forums, including maybe even some who don't publish where they live. Let's not let one bad apple taint the whole barrel, mmm k? Or we may have to remind you that Florida illegally elected GW Bush.
