You are most welcome. And I will NOT attack you personally just because we disagree on issues because it's just not the right thing to do.

^Thanks for reminding us all why Tennessee has been the butt of jokes throughout America for many generations.

^ You do realize I live in Tennessee, right? Not to mention Crescendo, Therarity, as well as some other pretty bright and progressive members who regularly contribute to these forums, including maybe even some who don't publish where they live. Let's not let one bad apple taint the whole barrel, mmm k? Or we may have to remind you that Florida illegally elected GW Bush.

Yes, TN is a bastion of intellectual awesomeness.

But what about sargon20? You implied that he was unintelligent and bad with money. What was it you said again? Oh yeah... "Oh boo hoo. Pay your fucking bills or did you use the $ 75.00 for beer and cigarettes?"

Trying to take the high road only works if you know how to walk it. Right now, you haven't even crawled to the first rung of the ladder.

I've wondered a couple of things about this situation;

1. If someone was trapped inside would they have stood there with their thumbs up their asses and watch his house burn to the ground and someone die, or would they have put the fire out? Wonder if a life is worth more than $75?

2. I can only assume he had insurance but I wonder what their stance is going to be on this? I bet they try and not pay on this claim, after all he didn't pay his $75.

I believe that this could have been handled in a different manner. The fire should have been put out, a set fine should be put in place say $500-$1,000. If they refuse or can't pay a lien on their property can always be put in place.

you guys are missing the point. the town has a publicly funded fire department but an assessment fee of $75 was added several years ago.

in essence this experience points to what life would be like under privatization. pay or die.

BTW - three pets died in the blaze!

more like pay your hare or get left in the cold.

otherwise we have things the liberal way:

You know, engaging in regional stereotypes is just plain silly.
It's no different than the morons who engage in "Lib" bashing.

BTW, Tennessee is home to Vanderbilt University. How's that for "intellectual awesomeness"?
Why don't you tell us what the "Sunshine State" has that compares?
In its 2011 ranking of universities, U.S. News & World Report placed Vanderbilt 17th among national universities. Most notably, in the same publication's 2010 graduate program rankings, the Peabody College of Education was ranked first in the nation among schools of education. Additionally, Vanderbilt is ranked first in the nation in the fields of special education, audiology, and education administration. Notable alumni and affiliates include two Vice Presidents of the United States, 25 Rhodes Scholars, seven Nobel Prize laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, and Academy Award winners.

Yes, TN has Vandy. whoopty fucking doo

What you omitted from people is the fact that TN is also among the ten worst states in the nation for crime rate, education, health of the populace, and as evidenced by the topic at hand, govt done TN style doesn't put out fires very well either.

Or in other words, government done Tennessee style can't police itself very well, can't educate itself very well, can't provide healthcare for itself very well, can't put out fires very well... Oh yeah, and the Feds had to come in and build and maintain the electrical grid in the state, because Tennessee couldn't do that for itself either.

But you want me to ignore the facts and believe your boosting about how 'smart' TN is...

Riddle me this genius; If TN is so smart, then why did it just let this family's house burn down?

Do you have any stats or links to back that up, or are you just talking out of your ass? I checked the state crime rate rankings for the past two years out of curiosity, and guess which state was tied with Tennesseee? Yep, Flor - i - duh! LOL!!! Next?

Or in other words, government done Tennessee style can't police itself very well, can't educate itself very well, can't provide healthcare for itself very well, can't put out fires very well... Oh yeah, and the Feds had to come in and build and maintain the electrical grid in the state, because Tennessee couldn't do that for itself either.
As far as providing healthcare, Tennessee was the first state in the nation I believe to provide affordable and/or subsidized healthcare coverage to the uninsured, 'uninsureable', and low income residents through the TennCare program, established in 1994. As far as trying to measure "education", it really depends on which broad or narrow criteria you choose - graduation rates, dropout rates, test scores, money allocated, primary and secondary vs. advanced degrees, basic literacy, etc., etc. The data is all over the map, it's sketchy at best, and hard to get a complete picture. I'm not even going to try.

I'm not sure what you're referring to as far as the "electrical grid" being built and maintained. I suppose you're referring to the Tennessee Valley Authority, one of Mr. Roosevelt's greatest, most innovative and arguably most successful 'New Deal' accomplishments. It brought revitalization, modernization and industry to one of the poorest, most neglected areas of the country, by utilizing the state's abundant water resources to provide hydroelectric power throughout the entire region. It was established in 1933, and has been self-sustaining and operating independently for decades. FYI, here's a little info on what TVA is and is not. [It's not a ward of the state, for starters, and rather than costing the taxpayers money, actually generates revenue in excess of half a billion annually]:
"The Tennessee Valley Authority, a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity for 9 million people in parts of seven southeastern states at prices below the national average. TVA, which receives no taxpayer money and makes no profits, also provides flood control, navigation and land management for the Tennessee River system and assists utilities and state and local governments with economic development." History
Are you seriously citing a wildly successful 'New Deal' program established in 1933, now the fifth largest utility company in the nation, that has been self-sustaining and operating independently for 50 years and has paid for itself thousands of times over - as an example of current state government incompetence? Wow. You're starting to sound just like one of those teabagger types. Have you been taking revisionist history courses at Glenn Beck University ?

But you want me to ignore the facts and believe your boosting about how 'smart' TN is...
What facts? You haven't provided any facts. Only snipes and stereotypes you pulled out your ass.

Riddle me this genius; If TN is so smart, then why did it just let this family's house burn down?
Now that's logical. No one of any intelligence would ever conclude that this was a deplorable, random incident that could have happened in any rural area, and probably has. I guess I missed the special election where the voters overwhelmingly decided to let this house burn down, or maybe it was a decision of the state legislature. Yes, the disastrous decision of one small town mayor is absolutely indicative of how stupid we all are and how everything is run in this state.

Hey, how come people in your state are always murdering college coeds? What's up with that? That's just sick. Are you all a bunch of murderers? And why do you all keep rigging presidential elections? And what's up with all you people wanting to burn the Koran?

Thank you for "educating" me all about my state, which is quite beautiful btw, and just filled with the nicest, friendliest, most hospitable people you'll ever meet, even if some of them are rather 'simple' by your standards. If you ever decide to come visit, they would probably even be nice to you, provided you don't behave like an intellectual snob and a complete ass.

BTW, you got so busy deflecting and stereotyping, you totally forgot to answer my question:
Tennessee is home to Vanderbilt University. How's that for "intellectual awesomeness"?
Why don't you tell us what the "Sunshine State" has that compares?
(17th in the nation, baby, top notch medical research institution, first in post-graduate education programs, special ed and audiology, 25 Rhodes Scholars, 7 Nobel Prize laureates, Pulitzers, and Academy Awards . . . )

Goooooo . . . . GATORS! lol.

In Max's defense, this house burning thing could have easily happened in New Hampshire (I'm kinda surprised it hasn't, actually) and no one would have made any sweeping condemnations of the state (or entire region, for that matter).

This in no way exonerates the firefighters; they flunked Civics 101.

IT's like OnStar in GM cars... and then you get in a helacious accident after the fact. Too bad.
God Bless America..........
.......Cranick hadn’t forked over $75 for the subscription fire protection service offered to the county’s rural residents, so when firefighters came out to the scene, they just stood there, with their equipment on the trucks, while Cranick’s house burned to the ground. According to the local NBC TV affiliate, Cranick “said he offered to pay whatever it would take for firefighters to put out the flames, but was told it was too late. They wouldn't do anything to stop his house from burning.”

Wow. Thats insane. For one of the most advanced countries, some aspects of America are so backwards.

Then again, dont want Socialism creeping in the back door.

The conservative/libertarian goal is to take America back 200 years. Everything that has changed and progressed in America since it's founding is not how the founders wanted it.

The form of government that survives on skeletal public services is actually close to the type of minimalism that moistens Teabaggers' panties.

The rich that are behind the TeaParty I'm sure want to 'unbundle' government services just like the airlines have 'unbundled' fares. And broken out as a separate charge every single thing they can. Of course this scheme is great for those who are rich and not so good for those that are not. What's happening with the airlines almost is like a microcosm of the real world. Those with money are treated fabulously. First class cabins are getting better and better while coach class cabins are getting more and more unbearable.

But alas when the moment was all theirs and the Republicans had both houses of Congress and the Presidency the attempt to 'unbundle' Social Security from the government went down in flames. It was a huge huge setback to those who saw it as merely a first step in rolling back the New Deal.

And here's a prime example of "getting left in the cold". This story is now making its way around the news:

A New Jersey woman suffering an asthma attack was denied an inhaler at a pharmacy because she was $1.99 short. Katherine O’Connor and her boyfriend were walking home from McDonald’s in Garwood, N.J., Thursday morning when she had the asthma attack, but she did not have her inhaler with her. She went to a nearby CVS, hoping to get a refill on her inhaler prescription. But, O’Connor was denied the refill because she did not have enough money to pay for the prescription. The medicine cost just over $21, and the couple was short $1.99. The boyfriend offered them his wallet and cell phone as collateral to go back to his home, which was only around the corner, to get the extra money needed to pay for the medication. The pharmacist refused. Needing immediate medical attention, Brown called a paramedic who came to treat the woman before she suffocated. http://consumerist.com/2010/10/shou...haler-to-asthma-sufferer-who-only-had-20.html

So in the wonderful world of the "free market" as touted by some clueless teabaggers, a pharmacy would assume no wrongdoing if a person needing emergency assistance died right in front of them all because they were short $2. Since they couldn't pay, they had the right to die. I seriously hope I don't have to go into any detail as to how unbelievably fucking stupid that is.

otherwise we have things the liberal way

Yes... the dreaded "liberal way". The pharmacist would have cooperated and allowed the woman's BF to leave his wallet and phone as collateral while he got the extra money. The woman would have refilled her prescription, no paramedics would have been necessary and the BF would have returned with the cash to pay the remaining balance. Crisis averted, and nobody in a CVS uniform would look like a total jackass for nearly letting someone die for $2. Soooooooooooo scary...

Have you seen how many hot chicks we have around here? They're expendable.

LMFAO HAve you ever set foot in the state of Tennessee? Good God go to Nashville for 5 minutes and you will see some of the finest women this country has.

As for crime rate... You live in Florida and you think crime is worse in TN? Wow! Time to put down the crack pipe.

^Meh, I was never terribly impressed. I REALLY don't like rednecks, or any woman remotely resembling or sounding like one. (and I'm sorry, but I've never known anyone from TN who didn't sound like a redneck, because of that damn accent they all have. It's not 'southern gentleman' like you find further south. It's heavily evolved 'mountain hick')

Besides, I've only been to/around Gatlinburg and various points of interest along I-75. Maybe I didn't get the full comprehension yet... One of my best friends lives in Gatlinburg actually and I'm going up there sometime this winter for a little cool relaxation. I'll have to crush some pussy while I'm up there and report back on my findings.

btw... Boston, Chicago and to a lesser degree DC are the places that impressed me with the sheer quantity of the sort of natural, down to earth busty whores that I prefer.

If all you have seen is around the I-75 coridor, then you haven't seen much of anything. Oh, and I-75 runs over/parallel to the Appalachian Mountains, hince the (as you so eloquently stated) 'Mountain Hick' accent. Go further west to Middle Tennessee and you'll find the people to be (what you would most likely term) very sophisticated in their speech. Go to Nashville, and you won't even hear much of a southern accent. Nashville is a very large cosmopolitan city (600k + in the city and around 1.5 million in metro) chocked full of museums, universities, and just about everything in between. Memphis is more a more gritty, diverse, and admittedly dangerous city, but hell if you lived in a city with 600,000 plus people (and well over a million in the metro) and a high poverty rate, then you would experience a similar crime rate.

Don't undervalue an area or state based solely on one small section.

Edit: Your statement calling women whores makes me want to think that you aren't really a high class person, so your judgement has lost all credibility in my mind.

The mountains are beautiful. I was up in Gatlinburg this past weekend and it was beautiful. Be prepared for horrendous traffic though.
