It really sure which forum to post this in, but there’s a lot of threads here about locker rooms, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I was recently working out in an older YMCA. The locker room had a normal bathroom with a urinal and stall, and then another bathroom area in the wet area near the showers. The wet area bathroom was just a urinal and a shitter, with a small wall partition between them - no stall. Made me think back to middle and high school. My high school locker room had two toilet stalls with no doors, and my middle school just had a shitter, two urinals, and a sink in a little bathroom area - no stalls or partitions at all. Seems crazy now. Older dudes - is that how all guys' bathrooms used to be? or just in locker rooms? Or are they still like that in some places? Takes some balls to use a bathroom like that, and I don't know that the towel dancers would be up to it, haha

Are you sure the doors weren't just missing because someone tore them off?
At the Y: yeah, there isn’t even a full stall, just like a little urinal divider between the urinal and the shitter.
At my middle school: there wasn’t even a stall, just a shitter on one side of the bathroom area about five feet away, across from a sink and two urinals.
High school: cinder block walls between shitters with no doors or even a place for hinges. They were at the end of the bathroom area though so they were actually pretty private (by comparison lol)

Haha great article. Yeah man- boys will be boys and men just don’t give a fuck, right? Haha. I think it’s a sign of manliness to get over any kind of shame, especially about your body.

It’s also a generational thing. Older generations (baby boomers and the previous ones) grew up in an era where privacy was a luxury. For example, my father had 4 brothers and two sisters. Most of the boys shared a bedroom with two bunk beds and the whole family shared one bathroom. To save time and water, my dad used to shower with one or two of his brothers, and it was pretty common to see one brother taking a shower while the other was taking a shit in the same room. If you add that social nudity among boys and men was the norm at the YMCA, the Boy Scouts, sports and the military, you understand why guys were used to be naked in front of others without no problem.

Younger generations grew up with a private bedroom, sometimes a private bathroom, and no exposure to nudity among peers. Then you understand the proliferation of private shower stalls at gyms and other sports venues, and boys avoiding showers after PE at school. They can not deal with being naked among others.

These generalizations are really annoying...

I am of that "older generation", grew up with six brothers, a mother and a father. Never saw any of them naked and have no idea what my brothers cocks looked like.

From Kindergarten through high school, every bathroom had stalls with doors, yes, even in the locker rooms. We did have one large open shower room in grades 7-12, which I hated.

I'm in my late 50's. My middle school was quite old when I attended, built in the early 1900's-- although I'm sure the restrooms had been renovated at least once, and had doors in the regular Boy's rooms, but not in the gym locker room. The again, the locker room plumbing was in such a general state of disrepair, who knows what once had been...

My high school was of much newer vintage, and was originally built with doors on the stalls everywhere, including in both gym locker rooms (we had two complete gyms, Old and New, added in an expansion). However, said doors were removed by the authorities in some of the Boy's rooms, when consumption of certain illicit substances in the privacy of the stalls became a problem. I suspect that in later construction (post 1970's) school architects may have decided to omit doors to discourage illicit activity. One hopes that they at least ensured that the cafeteria food was actually digestible.

Cool man. Yeah idk- I think my schools dated from the 1950s/1960s. I don’t know if I’ve seen any newer school or college locker rooms without stalls or doors.

My freshman dorm bathroom had 2 stalls. One got vandalized/torn off by someone one night and it took several weeks before it was replaced, leaving only one in play. At first, if the one with the door was taken, we would all either wait or go to another floor. After a while, some guys started using the doorless one if the other one was taken...at first at drunken times and then whenever. I joined the trend. At first it felt weird to be sitting there, with my pants down and penis out in the open, but being naked in front of each other before/after showering, etc., was totally routine, so everyone had seen my penis all the time anyway...just in a different setting. That being said, I do prefer the privacy of a stall door for #2, but it was sort of a manly experience to be that open

In fact, my all-boys school in the 70's had two toilet stalls in the locker room like the ones you describe: no doors. I wasn't shy, even when I was young, but I would never have taken a shit there. I think the reasons for missing doors have been addressed by other posts. Odd.

In college, they started taking the doors off the men's restroom stalls because they were trying to cut down on the sexual activity happening. It started with the library bathrooms because somebody kept drilling glory holes in the stalls. But then it moved to other buildings. A few years later they put the doors back up.

if you were in prison or the military you have no privacy, this was a good learning experience for you and other college mate to do and to be acceptable with no shame in that position.

you see everything when you take shower with another guy but this would be a little different as taboo sitting on the royal porcelain open to everyone to to see. I hope others had followed after what you done to make it less stressful.

HS

if you were in the military or on prison it would be this way with more humiliation to be seen by the prison guard’s and staff.

Military would be a little humiliating but they teach you real quick you will never have privacy because every man is equal to you, but not always in the junk area, but more so respect and no shame, it’s part of your living and every msn there is your brother and are equal.

the college gave you and the rest of the men a learning curve of tolerance of each other an accept it.

Our HS locker room had no doors on the stalls. I loved loved loved the locker room, but this seemed unnecessarily personal. It's one thing to show off your cock in the showers. It's another tk be available for someone to see you taking a shit. I suspect it was somehow supposed to help you man up.

Or, knowing HS boys, it was to discourage you from beating off in there.
