My grandpa once told me that when he lived in Minneapolis, you were queer if you didn't shower, or if you didn't swim naked. (This was back when indoor pools were male-only. Women wanted access to the pools, but didn't want the nudity.)
[post=309315]Quoted post[/post]

Yeah, this is true, but only in some High Schools around Minnesota. Guys swam naked in the pool.

Who said anything about high school? This was at the Y.

Viking, I've had the same question asked of mine.

You feel like responding with something like, "No, I'm just allergic to stupidity."

It's funny really.

People ask me stuff like that all the time.

Do you dye your hair?
Who does your highlights?
Is your hair permed?
Is your hair naturally curly?
Are your balls naturally that big?

I'm like, geezze.
do I look that odd that people think I'm un-natural??

I just smile and say yes, It's all me.
I know it may be hard to believe but here I stand.

LOL

I would never ask you such stupid questions, Viking. My mother taught me that it's impolite to talk with your mouth full! ;)

I remember being asked by adults all the time, when I was young,( 10 years old) was I wearing mascara. Even in Junior High School. I used to laugh because it seemed so weird.

Is this an American problem?? I’m from Holland and really I never feel uncomfortable in a locker room, restroom, in a steam bath, sauna or in the showers. We were brought up in a more open society. Of course men look at each other. They do everywhere on the globe. (Why are so may guys here on this site every day?) But looking at another guy has (almost) nothing to do with sexuality. If you don’t feel free, just turn your back to the one who is gazing at your crotch and use your towel when you walk through the room.
What is the problem with guys shaving or blowing their hair dry (even if it is the pubic hair)? The finest thing is that you are amongst men. Some behave discreetly and others don’t. Just the same as everywhere else in public places. If you don’t like that, avoid these rooms and stay at home or change and shower at your own place.

If you guys where brought up a little more open you shouldn’t have these problems. Every guy has a dick and balls (yes even your dad and granddad!)

Europeans are very open about life, love and nudity.......Americans are'nt quite so open..........sad but true.

I often wonder if the British have the same sort of attitude about locker rooms.........

I've always envied the attitudes of the Northern Europeans where it comes to body awareness and comfort with nudity. I grew up in a family with 4 kids and a single mom. We all saw each other naked all the time. I never thought anything about it. I still feel very comfortable with nudity, whether in groups or in public.

I was lucky I guess that I was not taught to hide my body from sight..

dikkiedik, you are so absolutely correct.

America is actually very Puritanical. On the surface, and a seething bed of repressed sexuality underneath. But God forbid, you see another man's penis! And an erection!!!!! Smite thee down.

btw, the Netherlands and Amerstam in particular, is just about my favorite place on the planet.

OK, this particular prude feels the need to resurface and respond. :D

I think some have misinterpreted the level of annoyance associated with these pet peeves. I see the few pet peeves I've mentioned as examples of baffling or eccentric behavior, not crimes against humanity. Were they THAT objectionable, I would surely be following the advice offered here and changing into his gym clothes at home.

Your puritanical friend,
Steve :)

It is definitely an American thing. I played sports in HS and I was around naked guys all the time so it's not an issue for me, but most straight American men are very homophobic and don't feel comfortable being naked with other men. I have no problem with a guy shaving or blow drying his hair when he's naked. I did post a pet peeve here, and what I posted does bother me, but that is the only real hangup I have. Of course I look at other guys in the lockerroom. It's human nature to look. I don't ogle, but I'll take notice. It's just that Americans are taught that area is "private" from the moment we are born, and with the homophobia added to it, it makes a lot of guys uncomfortable.

Steve26,
I certainly didn't aim the "puritanical" comment AT you. I am speaking in general terms regarding men and the nudity issue today. Men were much more comfortable with each other in "male" environments years ago than they seem to be today. And you can be as puritanical as you want!

Very much an American problem, I think. In the States, anything which might potentially cause a homo moment (and by that I mean so much as an erection which occurs while you see another man naked, even if it's just because you have to pee or because it's too hot) is considered a Bad Thing.

Don't want to be anti US here (anti Bush yes!), but I do think it is a US thing. I'm English and we pretty much shower in public and strip off in changing rooms fairly openly. I must admit that the younger guys (say, under 20) seem much more reluctant than older guys nowadays: maybe the English Public School traditions are finally being eroded. Seems a shame to me!

I’m glad to see that others recognize what I mean. Looking around and seeing naked men (young or old) is no problem. It has nothing to do with sexual preference. All men – straight, gay and bi – do it. If you find it a problem that others see you private parts, well cover it up with a towel or don’t use the showers or locker room. I agree, if some one is gazing at you or following and you don’t like that, you just should say something. I know there are freaks who try to take pictures with a mobile phone in locker rooms. These have to be reported to the staff.
I am glad to live in a place where nudity is just part of your life.

I hate to break it to all the straight guys, but you are most likely naked in the lockeroom every day with gay guys. We are everywhere. And really scary... what about the Bi guys, golly they must be trying to hump EVERYONE at the gym.

Oh shit, now I'm gonna have nightmares.

But really, why would anyone need to blowdry their pubes? That's just silly. Do they really need to be that fluffy?
