I'm watching Man Seeking Woman right now. I'm on the third season and I like the show, but the Lucy character really bothers me. She is too hot for the male lead. Their relationship feels like the least believable part of the show. Which is really saying something if you've seen the show.

The thing is, this is really common in TV. They have a nothing guy with a super hot woman. What do you guys think of that kind of pairing? Have you ever seen the opposite?

Anything is possible with relationships. Is it common in real life, not usually from what I have seen with younger couples. As people or couples age and rebound in some cases with a second or third marriage it becomes more common, as people become less concerned with looks and more about comparability.

Anything is possible, but some things are not likely.

"For every hot woman or man, there's someone who's tired of their shit."

Because there are so few Hots and so many Regulars, it makes sense that some Hots will fall in love with Regulars (or Duds.)

Also don't forget the dizzying spectrum of personal preference. One person's Dud can be someone else's Regular or Hot and vice versa.

It's common enough, do you not go out very often?

And I wouldn't consider Jay Baruchel as classically unattractive. He's just young looking.

You've raised this exact same topic before in relationships forum. Maybe you're placing too much value on trends in what society considers attractive, I dunno.

When you see an ugly guy with a hit woman there is usually a reason that they're together. The guy is usually wealthy or somehow impressive or the woman is a loser. The woman on this show was cool, smart and successful (kind of). She would have had her pick of any number of high status men. Kay's character on the show was a loser stuck in a dead end job. He shouldn't have been able to get the woman he ended up.

I don't think Jay is ugly, but he is at best average. A guy of his status shouldn't be able to pull a beautiful woman without there being some kind explanation.

But those trends matter. They matter a lot.

I feel like you're speaking my language.

In my experience a Hot would only debase themselves by being with a Dud if they were on some level less than optimal. For example, if the Hot had a small penis or drug addiction they would date a Dud because that would be the best they could do. Otherwise, it ain't happening. Personality can only take you so far.

Like @TexanStar said, lots of people are together not just because of looks.

I was lucky enough to meet an incredible woman who later married me, even though technically, most women are WAAAAAAY out of my league. She found other qualities in me she appreciated, besides appearance.

For one thing, you can't place much stock in TV shows and movies; they have writers and are not based in reality. When you see a couple where there seems to be a disparity in looks between the two, consider this: could it be that person is very outgoing and fun to be around? Has an outstanding sense of humor and make him/her laugh a lot? Maybe there are things they see in their mate that aren't readily apparent to observers.

Couples where there is large difference in looks or age exist for reasons other than mutual attraction.

Wally, I know what you mean, but what you mean is pathological. This statement from you above implies that there are adult couples in long term monogamous relationships soley for reason of mutual physical attraction.

I didn't say that people were together just because of physical attraction. You're twisting my words to dodge my point.

Wally's point goes back to Prom King and Queen nonsense; people are shallow as fuck in real life, until they grow up and reality sets in.

Are there exceptions to rules, yup; but there is also usually some semblance of fire where there is smoke

I'm watching this hot youtube girl talk about movies and all of a sudden she brings up this film I've never heard of before called Garden State. In this movie they have Natalie Portman paired with some uggo. I swear this dude looks like one of the rock creatures from the Neverending Story. Natalie Portman deserves an Oscar for being able to pretend that she was attracted to that bridge troll. Jesus christ.

This is why we need feminism.
