When I was a kid I was barefoot nearly all summer long. I'd walk barefooted through woods and streams, on sizzling hot pavement, rocks...I'd even ride my bike. My dad would get so upset and yell at me to put shoes on, but I wouldn't. I was a member of a pack of kids and none of us wore shoes. It was just the cool thing to do. We lived in a very nice suburban neighborhood with paved streets...maybe we were just being rebels. Eventually I moved on to other things and got more used to shoes. Today I don't leave the house without shoes, or at least flip-flops.
