OK, for those not familiar with the concept. Desert Island Discs is a long running BBC Radio 4 show (first aired in January 1942). Each week one celebrity is asked to imagine they're castaway on a desert island. They are invited to select 8 songs or pieces of music they would take with them (we have to assume there is a means of playing them). They are also automatically given the complete works of Shakespeare and the bible (or alternative religious text) and can choose one other book to take with them. On top of that they select one luxury item, an inanimate object that will not help them escape the island.

So LPSGers...

what are your 8 songs or pieces of music
book and
luxury?

Sentimental Lady, Fleetwood Mac
Winter Light, Linda Ronstadt

One book, this was tough too...
Perdido by Jill Robinson
Luxury item, could I have a yacht without a motor? If not; I guess a good swiss army knife.

Some people are just so greedy aren't they!

You can have 8 SONGS not 8 cds and your luxury has to be inanimate! lol

I am not greedy...the medic is going to be inanimate with the Rohypnol I snuck into his tropical coconut. And I am not using the medical supplies to escape the island either. Besides, I have got to keep my medic inanimate as long as I can without killing him.

Songs:

Biem Schlafengehen sung by Jessye Norman
Like A Motorway by Saint Etienne
Accidents Never Happen by Blondie
Rape Me by Nirvana
You Spin Me Round by Dead or Alive
Ch'ella mi creda by Jussi Bjorling
Heart Sutra by Tibetan throat singing monks
The Ultimate Dr. Who Title Mix by BBC

Books: I'm skipping the Bible and Shakespeare too...

Collected works of JRR Tolkien (just substituting one anthology for another)
The Tao te Ching
The Complete Charles Dickins

Luxury Object:

I really like the idea of a hotel too. Failing that, I'd take a furnished full-size luxury coach with solar array.

Songs:

"Xanadu" - Rush
"After the Flood" - Van der Graaf Generator
"Raining Blood" - Slayer
"A Day in the Life" - The Beatles
"House of the Rising Sun" - The Animals
"Time" - Pink Floyd
"Won't Get Fooled Again" - The Who
"Sympathy for the Devil" - The Rolling Stones

I'll also skip Shakespeare and the Bible.
A Tolkein anthology would be good, as would something by Michener (Hawaii or Centennial, maybe)

And for the luxury item, a fully-furnished house should would be nice. However, should something like that (or any other "cop-outs," if you will) be disallowed, I'd imagine a good hunting knife would be handy.

Seriously, all those good songs, and you choose that version of "Xanadu" (as opposed to the Rush song of the same name)?

Oh well, I guess we all have out guilty pleasures.

It would be incredibly difficult to choose just 8 songs, but my first inclination would be:

1. Janis Joplin - Little Girl Blue
2. Neal Young - After the Gold Rush
3. Jackson Browne - Fountain of Sorrow
4. Emmylou Harris - Boulder to Birmingham
5. Janis Ian - At Seventeen
6. Timi Yuro - Hurt
7. Roberta Flack - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
8. Nanci Griffith - Trouble in the Fields

Book - The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Object - a knife
