It is generally accepted that the problem with the early Kinsey study was not that men measured wrong, though they were not supervised so who knows, but that his study population was made up heavily of college men which turn out (especially in his time) not to be representative of the population as a whole. Over time the Kinsey Institute statistics have tended to correct toward a shorter overall average due to a better sample.

Nonetheless, your conjecture makes sense, in that it is pretty hard to mark the card upside down.
