Hi guys

plr.jpg

I'm a long time lurker and noticed the lack of music chat on the forum.

I'm a pretty handy guitar player and love all rock music and thought this could be the place to chat about both.

Well I hope this thread can be a cool one on here. So come introduce yourselves, your fav bands, your fav guitars, your fav music to drive to, your fav music to fuck to. This is the place to chat about it!

I'm really into Queens of the Stone Age at the moment.

I went to one of their gigs for the first time on their current tour and was blown away by their musicianship and presence. These guys, especially the ginger Elvis himself Josh Homme, are serious musicians. Was an incredible night.

Their album ...Like Clockwork was far and away my favourite from 2013. Still get so much from listening to it - the songs are so multi-layered and clever.

This is a nice taster: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f49yRhJ0NjI

I love music. And I play music on occasions also, though not as much as I used to. Primarily guitar, violin and a little piano. Nowadays almost only by and for myself, as I just lost interest in sharing my music with other people at some point (be it through releases or concerts). Maybe it returns some day.

I am sad to say that the songs you've linked to so far don't really do anything for me. I made a little list of my favorite records in another thread, and now I shall copy and extend it, with added links to some of the fuckin' best songs in ever!:

15: Legendary Pink Dots - Crushed Velvet Apocalypse
The Legendary Pink Dots - I Love You in Your Tragic Beauty - YouTube

14: Swans - Children of God
Swans - New Mind - YouTube

13: Lee Hazlewood - Cowboy in Sweden
Lee Hazlewood - The Night Before - YouTube

12: Coil - The Ape of Naples
Coil || Fire Of The Mind HD - YouTube

11: Townes Van Zandt - For the Sake of the Song
Townes Van Zandt - Waitin' Around To Die - YouTube

10: Love - Forever Changes
- The band of Arthur Lee, best friend of Jimi Hendrix, but far superior to Hendrix in every way. Imagine The Beatles or The Byrds with a richer orchestration. Which brings me to number 9...
Love - A House Is Not A Motel - YouTube

9: The Byrds - Sweetheart of the Rodeo
- Another classic. A mixture of country and folk. A mixture I happen to love in general. What can I say?
THE BYRDS /// 1. You Ain't Goin' Nowhere - (Sweetheart Of The Rodeo) - (1968) - YouTube

8: Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - I See A Darkness
- Probably my favorite singer of all time, sublime melodies, sublime lyrics. It could have been almost any of his albums, but I think this one has the others beaten by a small margin. If not for any other reason, then because of Nomadic Revery (All Around).
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Nomadic Revery (All Around) - YouTube

7: Roky Erickson - The Evil One
- Roky Erickson is such a fascinating persona. He almost overshadows his own music at times. But don't be fooled, his music is amazing. Anyone with a weakness for "dad rock", take notice. Though it is far more edgy and awesome than "dad rock" in general. Chances are your dad will like Roky Erickson anyway. His work with psych-rock pioneers 13th Floor Elevators is also highly recommended
Roky Erickson - White Faces - YouTube

6: Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love and Hate
- Anyone here who hasn't listened to this record yet? Then get off your ass!
Famous Blue Raincoat - Leonard Cohen - YouTube

5: Shirley & Dolly Collins - Anthems in Eden
- Shirley Collins is the voice of British folk music. Side A of this record consists of one 20 minute+ song, a beautiful tour de force in traditional folk. Side B follows with a number of extremely well crafted folk classics. I have to say that you must like your folk music very folky to really appreciate this album.
SHIRLEY COLLINS - Adieu To All Judges And Juries - YouTube

4: The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground and Nico
- I don't think this one needs any introduction. What can I say about this record that hasn't already been said?
Velvet Underground-"Sunday Morning" from "Velvet Underground and Nico" LP - YouTube

3: Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
- I don't think this one needs any introduction. What can I say about this record that hasn't already been said? (Why the hell is Blonde on Blonde excluded from youtube. Anyways, I give you Visions of Johanna anno 66:)
Bob Dylan - Visions of Johanna - The Bootleg Series, Vol. 4 : Bob Dylan Live 1966 - YouTube

2: Current 93 - Soft Black Stars
- My two favorite albums share a main theme: the apocalypse. Soft Black Stars is a very beautiful and simplistic piano-driven record that's about the small everyday signs of the impending (and ever happening) apocalypse. These are high quality poems set to music in the most fitting and astonishing way possible. The simplistic nature of this record is its greatest force, a true testament to the beauty of a completely naked arrangement.
Current 93 - It is time, only time (Subtitulado) - YouTube

1: Bill Fay - Time of the Last Persecution
- This one is amazing. Believe me. It will change your life. His other records are amazing, but this one... I cannot describe it with words. Slightly progressive folk with quite rich orchestration. It is almost eerily soothing considering it's a record about the apocalypse. No one should face judgment day without having been blessed by this record. Please listen to it. It's an unmatched gem.

Big Daddy Cool 1, I play guitar but only rhythm guitar style. I like soul, R&B, funk styles but I am getting into learning shoegaze, textural and ambient guitar styles as well. (It is pretty cool making the guitar sound like a synth pad wash by using mod, delay and pitch effects.)

I have an old black Sears Silvertone archtop and a white Fender Squier Telecaster. My favorite guitars are Fender Telecasters and Tele-copies.

My dream set-up would be: A Fender Custom Shop Tele...and a Fender Acousticaster. Two Boss ME-50s. A Roland GR-50 synth and synth pickup.
A Panasonic Toughbook laptop with a current update of Cakewalk SONAR (DAW) loaded with Spectrasonic soft synths..., Native Instruments Vintage Keys soft synths and a couple Oberheim OB-X softsynths.

Favorite guitarists: Steve Cropper (of Booker T and the MGs and Otis Redding) . Prince (from 1980-1994). Wendy Melvoin (all the rhythm guitar stuff she did on the Purple Rain tour was amazing!). Robin Guthrie (of Cocteau Twins). Andy Summers (of The Police). Nile Rodgers (of CHIC). Bill Frisell.

My favorite music for sex are R&B sex ballads. Even though, Melvin Riley doesn't have a major stamp in playing guitar or having guitar on his tunes...he is one of my choices for "make love" or even "fuck" music. Prince is also another choice for sex ballads.

Melvin Riley--IF YOU DON'T TELL, I WON'T TELL

Well you can pretty much guess my choice in music. I like both old and new Country & Western music. I think I enjoy classic C&W a little more however.

I also like old Rock & Roll. I believe it is because there is a similarity between the two genres. Both tell a story.

I will step outside those boundaries on occasion when I hear something that makes me want to start dancing or that has a great beat to it. A current example is Bruno Mars. However, I think my all time favorite, out of my box, is this song by Shaggy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s3vHFyybxk . The song was emailed to me by a lady who knew I would love it and I did. If you aren't familiar with it, listen closely to the lyrics.

Oh, no harm meant. It's just that the lyrics to "It Wasn't Me" can't exactly be categorized as "complex". Not that you said they were, it's just hard to imagine anyone missing the point of that song.
Thanks for clearing that up. No offence taken. That's the problem with postings. You can't tell what the writer's tone is. I just took it wrong.

Until my friend sent it to me, I had never heard lyrics like that. Remember I was listening to old rock and country so it surprised me to say the least. But I did like the rhythm and the words.

I am a professional guitar player who works for one of the industry's leaders in tone. If I told you my favorite guitar brand, that would lead a trail of breadcrumbs to my real identity... so I'll just say I play FMIC guitars.

I'm not anybody famous though, don't get excited. lolz!

My favorite bands? Oh man, that's a loaded question since I am 40 and like a LOT of retro music. I tend to not listen to a lot of guitar music since I play guitar for a living (I have to supplement my income with DJing though).

Definitely a HUGE fan of (in no particular order):

1). EVH
2). Wes Montgomery
3). George Benson
4). Warren DiMartini
5). George Lynch
6). Jake E. Lee
7). Al DiMeola
8). Alex Lifeson
9). Jeff Golub, Jay Graydon, Larry Carlton, Joyce Cooling, Peter White and all of the smooth jazz greats
10). Steve Lukather
11). Jimi Hendrix
12). Daryl Stuermer
13). T-Bone Walker
14). SRV
15). Mark Knopfler
16). Billy Gibbons
17). James Hetfield
18). Marty Friedman
19). Jimmy Page
20). Eric Gales (fusion guy not the younger dude)

I'm sure I left out like a million guys I dig... it's so hard to narrow my influences and idols down. lolz!

There are soooo many incredible guitar players out there today, it's INSANE!

Here's SRV drowsy and tired at a soundcheck absolutely KILLING it!!

Great thread, hopefully we can keep it alive from time to time.

I'm resurrecting this guitar thread from the dead... I'm tired of politics. And this pandemic is screwing with my guitar playing.

Name some current players! If you are one, what are your current influences. If you are a listener, who moves you? I'll start... Andy Timmons. So many reasons. There are others though...
