I had a great time being in the spotlight. But my time is done, and I've passed the torch along to the one and only, and not to mention beautiful, super_crayon.

http://www.lpsg.org/members/super_crayon.html

Spotlight Rules -
1. For the next 24 hours you can ask him anything you'd like to know. She can answer in all seriousness or be really silly (hopefully the former not the latter.) :biggrin1:

2. After 24 hours she'll pass on the hot seat to the next victim/participant.

3. Mr/Ms in the spotlight it's your job is to find a someone willing to sweat it out under the spotlight's glow. it's mannerly to PM the person first to make sure they are willing and available. Then begin a new thread announcing the next participant.

At what age did you start formal music lessons?

Which instrument did you study first?

Would you recommend a specific approach (like Suzuki, for example) for beginning lessons for pre-schoolers?

Where is the best place to search for a 1/8 or 1/4 violin in the Toronto area? Own or rent?

What one word best describes you?
outtacontrol?

Your idea of perfect happiness?
Riding my bike down a steep hill and trying not to eat bugs

What is your greatest fear?
Water slides. Combines my fears of water, heights, and fast rides

What is your favorite time of day?
Coffee time, whenever that is.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Kitchen stuff. I can't walk out of a kitchen store without buying something.

What words or phrases you most overuse?
"Damn I need a coffee" and overused word? Epic.

What is your current state of mind?
Blah. I need a coffee.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
When someone finds comfort in misery because it's all they've known.

What is your most treasured possession?

Hands down, my violin that I never play anymore.

What quality do you like best in yourself?
Patience.

Who is your favorite writer?

Ooooh bad question. I do like Janet Fitch's style but it's too bad she only wrote the one book. I'm really into non-fiction and history books.

What is it you most dislike?
I can't think of anything I truly dislike right now. I'm sitting in a magenta chaise in the afternoon Sun, watching the wind shake branches covered in cherry blossoms. Oh. I dislike lots of noise.

If you could offer me one piece of advice...what would it be?

Always carry earplugs. Instant bliss.

What is your earliest memory?
I was around 3-ish and our family was driving across the country. The first hotel we stopped at, I looked in the nightstand's drawer, pulled out the Holy Bible and said "Look Dad! The Holly Bibble!"

What was your first impression when you came to LPSG?
"Better keep my membership here on the DL"

What is your favorite thing about where you live?
The scenery. Some trees don't lose leaves and some flowers bloom all year round. Also, the trees are big and the ground is rocky. Reminds me of back home, with all the rocks and trees.

Do you ever visit NYC? If you were to visit the big apple what would you want to do first?
I haven't been since I was a toddler but if I did go back, I'd love to see the New York Phil play.

What is your motto?
Stop complaining. You're still alive, aren't you?

Fill in the blank: super_crayon is hungover because her and her friends worked too hard on an assignment last night and went through WAY too much wine!

Lengthy!

At what age did you start formal music lessons?
8 years old

Which instrument did you study first?
Violin

Would you recommend a specific approach (like Suzuki, for example) for beginning lessons for pre-schoolers?

Only if the child is really serious about violin. Suzuki is best for super young children. It's a method that's supposed to work for every young child and involves a lot of parental support too. The other big method is Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM, sometimes also CCM) which is what everyone ends up following because festivals are judged based on RCM grades, not Suzuki book level or age anymore.

Many violinists just don't teach Suzuki because you have to go to special training and get certified to teach the different levels, but I know there are a lot of excellent Suzuki teachers in Toronto.

Where is the best place to search for a 1/8 or 1/4 violin in the Toronto area? Own or rent?
You can try Long & McQuade for rentals but I would recommend the Sound Post, on the corner of Surrey Pl & Grenville near Queen's park in an old house. Parking is a bit of a bitch but they do have a lot for customers. Anyway, you could rent or own one from them, and they do take violins back as trade-ins when you need to upgrade. The problem with buying is you'll have to buy the case too, and I don't know if they'll take those back with the way children destroy them. So I'd say rent up until 3/4.

There are a few other violin shops in the city (Riminyi, Heinl) but they're much more expensive and more geared towards the professional. Just be warned: It's quite often a zoo in the Sound Post so call ahead and arrange to pick up the "outfit". Have any teachers in mind?

Thanks for the easier questions!

If you could throw a dinner party for any six people from past to present, who would you invite, where would you throw it and what would you serve them?

I would love to have the party somewhere that I'm familiar with but it would be awesome to have it in a historical location... How about the Chateau Frontenac Ballroom in Québec City?

Menu would be:
Antipasto plate & apéritif
Leek and potato soup
Baked (local) rainbow trout stuffed with lemon and rosemary risotto with green and white aspargus on the side
Apricot sorbet
Cornish game hen with mashed red potatoes (skins on) & steamed carrots, and everything drizzled in the hen jus
Mixed green salad
Plate of cheeses with honeydew melon
Crème brulée, tea or coffee

Guest list:
Magdaleine MacDonell, a person I used to portray at a living history site. I have so many questions to ask her.
Maynard James Keenan of Tool, and hope he brings some wine from his winery
Antonio Stradivarius, in hopes he might reveal a few tricks of his trade.
The three grandparents I never got to meet.

Funny you mention Maynard! I was going to tell you this anyways, but now it's even more appropriate. Maynard is in the Big D today at a Whole Foods market, signing bottles of his wine. How ironic is that? :biggrin1:

What's the sum of sin(3∏/2) + 2cos(tan(1/4)sin(8∏/3))? To how many decimal places? 2.008333237 on my calculator... Which... If you flip upside down, spells "Leseeebooz".

BAD WOMAN! your paternal grandfather goes at the head of the table :p

Right you are, man! Although, you'd be the man of the house, no? He'd be a guest.

Congrats on the spotlight SC!! NOW you will have to explain your love for your favorite Canadian super-group of all time...and I THINK you know who I'm talking about:)

Peace Budday!

My Dad had a tape of theirs, probably a best of. My brother and I would listen to it while playing legos, video games, or while playing outside. All their tunes are so catchy!

And on that note, I've PMed Amber1 but no reply yet... I'd like her to be next!

PERFECT CHOICE!! Who doesn't like a kooky British chick...just make her talk because there's something about that accent that makes me want to boil up a pot of tea!
