LOL True. The leads are quite white. There are nonwhite people among the cast though, but only with the side characters.
ye, that's the main problem. It's the first gay rom-com, but it's a white gay rom-com catering to a white audience. And this is coming from a white gay.

Dan Murrell a well respected movie reviewer (who enjoyed the film) on YouTube has a new video out breaking down some reasons why Bros "flopped" (he was also turned off by Billy's comments in response to the poor showing.

Starts at about 6:26. If you don't feel like watching the video TL;DR is:
- Romcoms theatrically haven't been doing well in recent years
- Lack of star power/big names
- Poor marketing (Name, Poster, trailer potentially off putting to straights)
- R rating depressed viewing (rated R Romcoms tend to perform worse in recent times)
- September 2022 is the worst September Box Office performance since 1996
- homophobic/religious chunk of audience that would never watch a gay romcom to begin with

Rom Com being a box office hit is honestly was a thing of the past. Its just not the same as 90s/early 2000s. Post-2010 there only been a few like “crazy rich asians” or “the big sick” that has made it big. Most rom coms nowdays are released on streaming sites bc they’re just not making money like they used to.

bet you anything Spoiler Alert will do so much better at the theaters and it won't be blamed on homophobia

huh, i didnt even know this was a thing

I just saw the trailer and I definitely agree that they did a much better job conveying the actual movie instead of just focusing on it being gay

though of course this is probably another example of something I wouldn't notice at all if it wasn't gay, but it is something I see people who like this type of movie going to see from the trailer alone

The last romantic comedy that did well theatrically was "Lost City" and it was led by names like Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum and had a highly publicized cameo by Brad Pitt.

The trailers also emphasized the "adventurous" nature of the plot (with the leads being chase around the jungle) to make it more appealing to see it on a big screen.

This Bros movie does in fact feel like a streaming sort of flick that somehow got a wide release. The fact they dump this during Halloween season is even more of a head scratch.

Yeah, I think there were so many little things that could have gone better, but combined they all created the perfect storm that led to it not doing well last weekend. And Billy's remarks certainly did not help, but don't think he should shoulder all the blame.

I'm not one to rely on conspiracy theories but I wouldn't be surprised if someone in charge did this on purpose hoping the movie would bomb then disappear. Not because of the gay content per se but maybe it had something to do with Billy.

This kinda reminds me when the Weinsteins dumped Grindhouse (a retro style horror flick) on april during Easter hoping it would bomb and put a sting at Rose McGowan's movie career.
