Male Rape - Al Jezerra

Yesterday Huffington Post and other news organizations around the world issued a special report about Al Jezerra's groundbreaking report on male rape and its use as a tool of torture in war zones. The figures out of Bosnia were especially astonishing.
The scandal of rape in American prisons was not covered.

In conflicts all around the world, the incidence of use of rape as a weapon of war is astoundingly high. In El Salvador in the 1980s 76% of male prisoners reported being victims of sexual assault. In Bosnia 80% and similarly high rates in other conflicts.

Yesterday, AJ had a short segment about the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where rape is also used as a weapon of war in the competition for access to the region's wealth of mineral resources. But the other story mentioned that while 30% of women reported being assaulted, 22% of men also were victims. So the spread between the two gender groups is much less than one would have expected.

V, thanks so much for the links. I've long suspected, read: known, that male on male sexual violence and rape was a hugely under-reported crime of humiliation, revenge and torture, particularly during wartime. God forbid American media would focus on it; we get scads of documentaries about female children's sexual slavery and yet clearly the same thing goes on with young boys all over the world.

I can't account for the fact that western culture finds it so distasteful to acknowledge that men and boys suffer these things as well--and in numbers that closely approximate those of women and girls--but it is the great, unmentioned, secret shame. My heart breaks for the victims.

this is an excellent thread and the first time i have seen it appear here at LPSG.org in the 10 years i have belonged. i agree vince. i never would have believed, when viagara and cialis first appeared, that it would be used as a method of terror, but i now see what a weapon of evil it can be.
