One of the huge issues in this country now related to obesity is that healthy foods cost more becuase the unhealthy ones are subsidized by the government. It might be a little tricky to work over the transition to healthier foods but I think that it is possible. While you get more calories per dollar for the unhealthy foods you get more nutrients for your dollar with fruits and veggies. Once your body has the nutrients it needs there will automatically be a decreased need to eat b/c your body has what it needs (once the physical addiction to sugar and fat wears off)
I was chubby for most of my childhood through highschool. At the end of sophomore year i was 210 (given not hugely over weight but more than i wanted to be). Over the last 5 years I have slowed decreased down to about 170 now. All through college I just made sure to have a salad with lunch and dinner to fill up some room in my stomach b/c otherwise i would be having way more calories than I needed. Relatedly look into chia seeds. If you get them in bulk they're about 6 dollars a pound. They have all the essential amino acids, lots of minerals and omega 3 fatty acids as well as tons of water soluble fiber. 2 tablespoons will absorb 24 oz of water so they fill you up as well as cleansing your system.
I guess what i'm trying to say is that start with making suble changes and it will go a little smoother. A lot of people say to eat less but that is always easier said than done. I say eat the same or even more but make sure that its healthy food. That way you wont have as many cravings or be hungry but will still be eating fewer calories.
