I was cleaning out my DVR this morning, and erased an episode of the tv show TABOO, which was all about third world public rituals that are rites of manhood passage: African ritual teen circumcision, carving intentional scars into the skins, running with a herd of animals, facing the sting of insects, etc. Reminds me of the scene in FLASH GORDON...

Our culture has some common 'road signs' that are on the way to manhood: getting a drivers' license, graduation from high school, getting plastered on your 21st birthday...

Being with and caring for someone going through a terminal illness is an awesome ritual of passage. I know it doesn't sound creative, but learning to hunt with a sober adult is a really good way for most boys to learn valuable life lessons. Having awareness and contol over life and death is a good skill for young men to acquire.
Oh yeah, and don't forget that first blow job is also a rite of passage. This is LPSG after all!

Yeh, that can be an eye-opener and real catalyst for maturity. Lots of people don't have to deal with that for years tho - so I guess it's a cementer of true adulthood rather than just a mark from boyhood to manhood?

There is plenty of talk on this board about locker room behavior and other forms of social nudity, but not a lot of other ways where we can be influential in highlighting (and saving?!?!) the male bonding and man-positive aspects in our society.

Spilling seed shows you've reached the age of maturity- and most (primitive) cultures have embraced this type of behavior (pair bonding, nudity, tests of courage, family sending the warrior out on a quest...) thru all of history. I was suggesting something that would be along these lines.

Male bonding is an aspect of what I was taking suggestions for: a new ritual that would be a cool rite of passage. Step up and drop an idea in the suggestion box.

Thing is, we aren't a 'primitive culture' so trying to manufacture something which emulates that makes little sense.

You seem to be working on the basis that western culture has no rituals. It does. I'm British so I went for a pint with my Dad and then went to a football match when I hit 18.

I have no desire to make up a new right of passage when there are plenty, all valid but relevant to the individual, within the society(ies) in which we live.

I think there are no meaningful manhood rituals in our society which is why we have boys who are literally 45 and have never grown up and become men. There is no enforced societal "day of reckoning" where you leave your childhood behind and become a man. Interesting to see new ones in this thread. Thanks.

I've been influenced by my feminist relatives, and their take on this would be loving connections (not sexual) with other guys rather than competitive. Since I never had brothers, I always looked forward to having overnighters with my male cousins and sleeping together in the same bed. For me it was very comforting and emotionally satisfying when we cuddled together.
