Mariah Carey notches her 17th No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 this week as "Don't Forget About Us" ascends one rung to the top of the chart. Carey and Elvis Presley are now tied for second place among artists with the most No. 1 hits in the rock era. Carey also becomes the only artist to post two No. 1 songs on the Hot 100 in 2005.

Moot point. By the time her career is over, she will have more #1 hits than Elvis. Plus--she can sing the lights out and writes all her own lyrics.

although i'm not a mariah carey fan ... there's no denying she can sing "the lights out."

except for when she does that dog whistle thingy (aka scream to the top of her very, very big lungs).

I think that practically everybody knows an Elvis song.
I couldn't name one of hers....................
And, Elvis is enjoyed by a much wider demographic.

Indeed, caneadea. Elvis would have been 71 this coming Sunday.

Will we still be listening to Mariah songs when she's 71?

And will she look as run-down as Elvis by then? Or Keith Richards, for that matter?

That "head voice" is a note that few can hit and she seems to be the only one who can control it (modulate it). Not saying I don't appreciate Elvis' career; but his racism kind of ruins it for me (even if it was accepted at that time). Mariah appeals to a wider audience than you think, Caneadea. She is going to go down in history as the most successful female artist ever and possibly the most successful artist (based on album sales). We'll see.

Mariah Carey does have an exceptional voice, especially when she can hit those extemely high notes, but reaching Elvis status? Uh, let's not get "Carey'd away".

Good lord ppl why bring raceism in to this:rolleyes: give credit where credit is due. Elvis was a great singer for his time and generation, the true value of his talent will never be realized because of his early death, addiction to drugs etc... Maria's career is still going strong and she has many years ahead of her yet . Personally I like Elvis better, that being said he'll always be the King. A title deserving of his talent maybe, proably can you picture anyone else as king? Who really knows, Opinions will vary a few other come to mind. The Late N Great Ray Charles for one, his music is also timeless to me. Will Maria's music be as timeless? Maybe...Music will always continue to Evolve, its the sign of the times. Just my 02 for what's it worth;)

Let's see.....

McDonalds Big Mack with fries, large fake boobs, too much glitter and a diva-complex. (Mariah)

or

A big, thick steak with a baked potato and all the trimmings.... (Elvis)

Pass the horseradish, please. Nobody F*s with the king.

yes, yes indeed. i just don't like ... it's irritating.

indeed she does and whether i give her credit for it or not she has earned it. however, mariah has never been one i've raved about; i'm more of whitney houston fan - despite her recent negative publicity.

i don't doubt it as her album sales are exceptionally high.
