As a fucktard who agrees with you that peace, environmentalism, women's rights, minority rights, and justice are important ideals, let me assure you that they are indeed "liberal" ideas.

The very definition of "liberalism" is important to your discussion. Liberalism comes to us courtesy of the Latin "liberalis" or "of freedom". Forget the long history of the term, which you can read about in Wikipedia here; the problem is that we've allowed traditionalists to color the word liberal and make it into one of the most vile things one political candidate or party can call another.

One of my favorite things to do in polite social conversation with individuals who hold strong political or economic / socioeconomic views is to ask them if their views are "liberal". Of course, most, after choking on their gin and tonic, will assure me that their views are not liberal. As they look at me in puzzled astonishment, I merely discuss the etymology of the word "liberal".

At some point, I will tell them that being liberal is not bad... think about it: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Ronald Reagan were all liberals. I'll cast my lot in with them anyday. I usually conclude with a head-nod and the remark... "it's too bad that there are so many people in the political debate who just don't understand basics, don't you agree?" In terms of getting their agreement, I'm batting 1.000 so far.

Perhaps, Tripod, toning down the moral outrage and turning up the intellectual scrutiny is all you need to get your message across. I am all about freedom and extending fundamental human rights to everyone as well as ensuring freedoms are and remain accessible -- as long as they are counterbalanced by responsibility. I think you will find most traditionalists (and their ilk: tea partiers, hard-line republicans, etc.) will find that they, too, are in fact "liberal".

Now, aside from the 'fun with the English' portion of my comments, I will have to tell you I write to take exception to your leading point. Appellate judges can't be castrated just because they have a point of view on the law that you or I don't agree with. In any free (ahem, "liberal") society, the rule of law must always remain sacrosanct.

This thread is actually made up to two parts. The first runs from the OP through post (ahem) 69 which is date-stamped 04/01/10 and conforms to some (but hardly the worst) of the foot-stomping, hair-pulling childish excesses that were finally addressed by Aconitum (one of the admins) in this thread here about changes in allowable form and content in this forum a bit more than a month later.

Though the new rules have yet to be handed down, the tone of this forum has changed dramatically following several partial mini-bannings (more like time-outs, really) involving six members who broke the rules as established in the thread linked above about a month ago.

Though there's still plenty of saltiness and tang in the more recent threads started since Aconitum announced an imminent change (and the corresponding time-outs), it really has become much more interesting to post here now than when this thread was initiated in March: points are more fact-based (or at least evidence-based), with a greater use of links to legit sources and the rhetoric has cooled dramatically as seen in the posts following #69.

As I was never a big fan of the whole "-tard" verbiage (fucktard, libtard, conservatard, retard, etc) I've been especially impressed by its relatively infrequent use since Aconitum dropped the hammer in May; calling Tripod out for having used it prior to the sea-change is, while completely understandable, kinda like punishing a high-schooler for a playground fight that occurred in sixth grade.

We've all grown a lot in the last six-or-so weeks (some, granted more than others). And while there are still occasional flare-ups amongst the regular posters here (and occasional dinosaur sightings that have been nipped in the bud), we all deserve a collective pat on the back for the efforts made in making this place a more civil and thoughtful spot on the web.

As to the modern used of the term Liberal, it's my understanding that it came on the heels of the various popular uprisings in Europe in the late 1840s, when Autocracy was modified in many European kingdoms and empires to include at least partial popular representation in the form of various Dumas, Parliaments and National Assemblies. Liberal meant freedom from despotic, autocratic rule (admittedly to varying degrees and none coming close to the Franco-American ideals of complete democracy which had to wait until the end of WW1).

At least that's how I know of it. That's not to exclude the founding of the US, just to make it more of a footnote to what was a later, European movement toward reform and change in how the world came to be governed.
