Make an issue out of your sexual preferences that disturb morale or detract from the mission and you are the problem, not the unit.

Using your reasoning, any straight guy who talks about his wife, girlfriend and kids back home is making an issue of his sexual preferences. Even wearing a wedding ring could be construed as broadcasting one's preferences. Missing the folks back home or telling your comrades that you don't support the mission and want to go home definitely disturbs morale and detracts from the mission.

You don't get it do you? Talking about your wife, girlfriend & kids back home is normal, as is wearing a wedding ring. Not sure how those things are an offensive or disturbing act in of themselves.

I have no problem with someone who is Gay & in the military. I have a problem with someone who wants to change the culture of the military, detract from the mission or push a political or social agenda. Having been there and done that in terms of military service, I can tell you in this day in age, no one cares what you are into on your own time. Want to be respected in a combat unit? Run faster, punch harder, shoot better, carry more weight, be the first to volunteer, be the first one out the door, have your gear in outstanding condition and order, be loyal to the mission, your buddies and your country first. The rest is all bullshit no one cares about.

Isn't that the same weak argument people used against racially integrating the military? The sky never fell after past miltiary cultural changes, did it?

You REALLY have no idea what the military is all about do you? Its not about culture in the same way that you think about everyday society. The Military's job is to kill people and to break things, thats the culture. Whether you are white, black, yellow, red, brown gay, straight or a combination of all of those things it does not matter, Just be really good at Killing and breaking things.

I guess I should have realized that not everyone understands the mission of the military. Hopefully you do now and you appreciate the people who uphold the traditions and culture of the military, regardless of their sexual preference.

Nice side-step of my analogy. You're talking out of both sides of your mouth, saying it doesn't matter but then it does if someone tries to force it on you. Which is it?

What you are saying is the military should be autonomous from any civilian influence or code of ethics. Sorry, but that doesn't exist unless your're part of a military dictatorship where the military answers to no one. Of course, it's about killing and breaking things, but there are rules and conventiions that the civilised countries are supposed to follow, at least in theory. The military is not just what's on the field, it includes logistics, support, and whole military and civilian based industrial complex. If the military does not reflect and is accountable to society, it is out of step with it.
