See, I'd classify myself as more of a Macho than Metro, that being said I do keep myself clean.

For instance, I go from wearing a New York Islanders or Jets jersey one day, to wearing a track jacket, nice jeans and white Adidas the next day. I like to change things up all the time. I do trim, but thats mainly for the girl I'm currently with. I am clean shaven, but I keep my hair pretty long. I work out and play sports, but I also take care of my appearance. I shotgun beers and play beer pong, but am not opposed to having a glass of wine, or a mixer now and then.

So I guess, yes you can be both.

My definition of a metro is a guy who tans, gets manicures and pedicures, has 10 pairs of shoes, 5 man bags and designer clothes. A metro is a guy who spends
hours getting ready to go out, has more products in his hair than a female, and spends a lot of money on appearance.

Americans in general are not into fashion (especially in the Midwest and the South) as much as in Western Europe. There are many rough necks and trailer trashes in living in a large sections of the United States which they tend to be more "macho". You can be both metrosexual and macho in Europe but here in the United States, the American culture tend to perceive the two as separate. American men are hung up on their feminine side more than the Europeans despite some macho-oriented countries like Italy. The Europeans have a lot more metrosexuals in cities like Paris or Rome than even comopolitan places like Los Angeles or New York. If you're gay, your gaydar wouldn't work as well overthere. I find metrosexuals tend to look more sophisticated than someone who just wears ordinary blue jeans, throw an ad-printed T-shirt on and wears his favorite team's baseball cap. And even when an average Joe dress up, he tends to put on a button-up dress shirt, khaki pants, put on a nice pair of shoes which he will easily blend in with the rest of the "Joe's" to look "good" but I wouldn't say it's chic and classy. And more thing, there are those Americans who are neither "macho" or metrosexuals, there many of them who follows the look of so-called "trendsetter" celebrities and music artists which I find these followers uncreative and sometimes tacky when they tried to make a fashion statement. How should we call THEM??

I can't argue with this, no matter how hard I try.
Ha, thanks MB!

I just never did understand the burning need some people have to wear designer labels. One glaring example that comes to mind is the Hilfiger label... he takes a $5 t-shirt, prints his name & logo on the front. Then the gullible consumer comes along, pays $50 for a $5 article of clothing. Damn, I shoulda been a designer, if some rube is willing to PAY ME $45 to advertise MY MERCHANDISE. That just seems backward. I must admit, though, it is brilliant marketing.

A quote that has stuck with me for years: "Fashion is what you buy off-the-rack. Style is what you do with it." I like to dress with some style, but fashion is a big turn-off for me.

Yeh...and what fashion market do is try to imitate individuals styles, making products that many times are even foreigner to the average "Joe"...and is understandable is not embrace because it was born an ocean apart. Just imagine something that grows naturally in the streets and centers of European cities being copy and than mass product by big companies to make profits...by the time it gets in the US there is already a new thing...always a new thing.

But for sure there is an European fashion and style and an USA one. But as Europe so small and cozy where average people can walk all over the place (countries) here in the US the average persons is expose mostly to the same old department stores and retailers...mass production. And there is no doubt that North Americans are buying and consume a lot of those 'fashions' near by. And even GAP US, that for me is simple neutral trying to change its approach bcause of their lost in sales ...Gap Tries on European Style

Than in my view what all those retailers are triyng to make profits of course but they already know it will not fly without the 'right' style tendency that attract consumers. But what is born in the 'streets' by pure individual creativity and good tastes is what I call natural, and of course the good quality of stuff x the cheap imitations. Yep, to invest in just a few good classy itens intead of wardrobe full of 'discartables'.

And I do agree with the 'trendsetter' celebrities copies that goes on too..

Hah, that's easy. Offer him a pair of Prada shoes.

If he screams "Oh my god, PRADA!!!" and promptly busts a blood vessel in his eye, he's a nelly homosexual.

If he immediately puts them on and admires himself in the mirror for the next 20 minutes, he's metrosexual.

If he says "Why the fuck you givin me shoes? You some kinda fag?", he's a macho straight guy.

If he says, "Eww, a status label! No thanks!" he's probably me.

Agree with everyone who's said it so far -- this is the best classification I've seen yet.

You'll find all of the above in one block around Dupont, too.

I have to wear the clothes from the store, and I appreciate being able to find stuff that fits my body, but I don't think I have the underlying interest. I still feel comfortable bumming around in a hoodie, going unshaven for a few days, and that's about the size of it...

If you need to be wearing a hoodie to feel like bumming around, you have an underlying interest... :biggrin1:

Eh, just playin'...

Thanks, LeeEJ! Yes, Annie's Paramount Steak House is one of my favorites, I always want one of the tables next to the sidewalk so I can watch the diversity go by.

Two current fashions I was tired of the first time I saw them, and can't wait for them to pass: the "rooftop" hairstyle on the guys, and the "tapered-toe" shoes for men and women. What the hell are they thinking? I can't help but chuckle a bit. Of course, women have always been more focused on fashion over practicality, but one thing women have traditionally insisted upon was having (at least the appearance of) small feet. I worked as a shoe salesman, one college summer. Without fail, 9 out of 10 women insisted on putting their size 7 foot in a size 5 shoe. Period. Now, they want to add that extra 6-inch-cone at the end of their toes? And the men's tapered toe shoes look like duck feet.

I guess I'm just too pragmatic. No, you can't revoke my gay card. It was never issued, I couldn't pass the test.

I went to Annie's with some friends prior to this fall's High Heel Drag Race, and although they took our reservation when I called it in earlier that day (they later told me that they don't normally take reservations), we nearly lost our spot because not everyone was there on time. The resulting service was unfriendly & slow, but it made for a lot of laughs afterwards, too, and at least we didn't miss the race.

What a lot of fun that was! Two blocks of nearly shoulder-to-shoulder people, and the cops on hand looked either entertained or bored. It's not often that you see so many people crammed in one place without a hint of hostility.

Oh yeah --

I should start a shoe company, or at least consult with one. My idea is to move the size designations "up" two measurements. That is, an old size 7 would be reclassified as a 5, etc. Women with "true size 7" feet will remark about how much more comfortable those size 5 shoes are than other shoemakers'.

LOL!

YOu are playing right into the hands of those who make a distinction between fashion and style. Enough said....
