i actually chatted with him online, in the lpsg forum, a couple of days ago. He was rather kind and polite and answered all the questions i asked. He is straight, the gay-for-pay was just something he did "no biggie" and he has retired "Matt Hughes" for about two yrs now. All pretty much his words. He hasn't made any gay vids for a few years and he's indicated that he doesn't intend to make any more. Although if he was 'gay for pay' then maybe it's just a question of the price being right, gay vids having a reputation for paying their 'big stars' more than str8 vids. His str8 career is hugely successful though so I doubt if there's much incentive for him to go back.
