Over presidents day McCain held a town hall meeting in AZ that did not go smoothly. There was some outrage over his new stance on immigration. Some of the hard rightwingers in the crowd really chewed him out.

"Where's the fence!?!?"

"You're not doing anything!"

"Why aren't you kicking these ***** out!"

Several other not so nice things were thrown at him. He was shaken, but stood his ground. Just goes to show how risky this reform is for the Republicans when it comes to their base when they go back home. Trying to find a youtube clip of these outbursts. Post a link if I can find one.

I want to start a discussion over this with McCain and other republicans who are moving on this reform. Brave actions for change in the party or depseration for the latino vote in 2014? Please try not to use party lines.

All the while McCain was pleasantly oblivious because he thought he was in Palm Springs waiting for a Club sandwich and a ice tea.

C'mon man, it's NOT their base. It's part of their constituency, just like the nutjob Communist lovers are part of the Liberal base.

Any reasonable person knows that we need illegal immigrants (not necessarily all of them) because they work jobs that lots of Americans think are below them.

And sorry if illegal is considered insensitive here, but logic prohibits me from saying undocumented or any other equally nonsensical PC term.

We don't need illegal immigrants. We need people who are realistic about the cost of their labor. It just so happens that "illegals" are more practical. Too many Americans hope for lifestyles that are not commensurate with their skill level because they've been lied to their whole lives about how special they are and how they can do anything but were never taught how to work hard or smart.

Not gonna lie, it sounds like you're making a pretty compelling point as to why we need those illegals...unless of course those ingrained beliefs are expected to change overnight.

I hope you also number corporate CEOs who walk away with tens of millions in bonuses and separation packages among those who's pay is not commensurate with their skill level.

I don't' think the problem is employees, I think it's corporate and investor greed. They're so used to having obscene amounts of money dumped in their laps (through little to no effort of their own) that they have come to believe those ridiculous profits are the norm.

My point is if we were Canadians talking about an influx of hipsters without passports, we'd be complaining about those illegals who just bum around drinking shitty beer and listen to music all day, and not that they were taking over jobs.

I dunno. I think it's pretty skillful to convince America's taxpayers to give you billions in bailouts after you recklessly blew billions trying to flip some investments. It's pretty skillful to manipulate media narratives to get people to vote against their own interests so that you get taxed less. Some of those guys want loads of money, and they've engineered situations where they can get it. That's a skill that apparantly a decreasing number of Americans possess. But immigrants time and again demonstrate that in America, that is an American problem.

Here's a few links. Last one has several clips, but there is some commentary to sit through between excerpts.

John McCain Testy Exchange Over Immigration at Arizona Town Hall Event - YouTube

John McCain uses compassion to defend immigration in explosive fiesty town hall meeting - YouTube

John McCain Gets An Earful From The Angry Crazy Right - YouTube

Republicans who have come out in favor of immigration reform have alot of fire waiting for them at home. A few have chosen to face the flames. The question is are they taking this heat because it's the right thing to do or because they are desperate for votes?

I disagree with the poster who said it is not the republican base.

If it's not the base, why did every republican candidate essentially pander to them in the primary? Very harsh policies just to support a "lunatic fringe" of the Republican Party (and cost you a general).

That doesn't make sense.

Are there sensible republicans? Yes. Are they a minority? Definitely.

The one big problem I see with the republicans is that their divisive policies are finally coming home to roost:

Are you gay? Shouldn't vote republican
Are you a minority? Shouldn't vote republican
Are you a woman? Shouldn't vote republican
Are you a younger voter? Shouldn't vote republican

Notice I said "shouldn't". I'm am sure there are members in each of those groups that WOULD vote republican, if the current crop wasn't bat shit crazy.

For the love of god bring back Jack Kemp, George Bush and William Buckley. Talk some sense into the tea party fucks.

Votes. And math.

I don't think people truly realize what a bad election 2012 was for republicans:

1. Unified base wanting desperately to kick out Obama.
2. High unemployment and slow growth.
3. President's signature accomplishment only somewhat popular.
4. Rising debt.
5. President's base seemingly not fully behind him.
6. President losing independents.

10 years ago, it would have been impossible to win against that.

Obama won over 300 electoral votes. Can you imagine if the economy was "okay"? It would have been even worse...

The reason is because they have a shrinking base, especially in the swing states where it counts. Hence the Latino vote outreach. They have to do it, or they run the risk of not being a major party in 20 years. I saw a study after the election that said Texas will be "purple" in 20 years if the population trends continue.

TEXAS!

Oh well, this is the comeuppance that they should have calculated into the equation. When you decide to play up the racial and ethnic bias into your stances then don't be surprised when the rabid xenophobes act plum crazy...

Let me go on record as clearly NOT in the McCain camp. However, in addition to standing his ground in the town hall meeting referenced by the OP, I will point to one incident that shows that the man has some depth of character...

During the 2008 campaign, McCain was confronted at one of his stops by an elderly woman who claimed that Obama was 'an Arab'. McCain shook his head, took the microphone away from her, and said something to the effect that then Senator Obama was a decent American with whom he had 'policy' disagreements.

Are some of McCain's antics ridiculous? Yes... the Benghazi hearings come to mind. However, I will respect and acknowledge that the guy has some morals.

Emphasized for effect.

The man lost my respect for good when he named Sarah Palin his VP.

NCbear (who wants a fiscal conservative and social liberal who's not afraid to buck his/her party's base to step right up and run for president--I've been waiting for a long time for this semi-mythical creature to appear )
