Ok so you all seem highly informed and reliable types, and a nice person wants to buy me an iphone for christmas, having never owned any Apple technology before and not having followed the development of the iphone very closely I'm unsure which iphone to ask for.

I have a choice between an they 16GB & 32GB ( they're two dfferent kinds of iphone right ?:biggrin1: ) and the 8GB, which is the best and why?

Or perhaps you think iphones are shit and can suggest a much better alternative.....?:wink:

Just to be clear I am aware that these phones have different amounts of memory and stuff but that's about it, LOL

The 8 gig is a slightly slower processor, the 16 and 32 are identical except for storage space. If you can swing the 32 you can add more movies and tv show than with the 16. You can also do video on the 16 & 32 which you can't on the 8 gig. The iphone itself is terrific, AT&T is not as terrific, but I don't think its much worse that I fared with Verizon for 15 years. I use the iphone all day, I use the apps and find them very, very useful. I have been thrilled with the phone for 2 1/2 yrs.

Bourgeois pig :biggrin1:

You know what's worse, I'm actually a lumpen prole aping the manners of the Bourgeois :biggrin1::biggrin1::biggrin1::biggrin1::biggrin1:

Now I'm open to being told that an iphone is a waste of money. The price for one here is astronimical, on contract the minimum you pay is 40 euros (about $60 ) a month which is frankly daylight robbery, and I certainly wouldn't be able to justify paying that much based on how much I'd use it.

But just think how utterly utterly you'll seem with it: glamor has its price.

If the person's offering the 32gb go with that.

Or you could get a BlackBerry. Not quite as hip as the iPhone, but soo much more classy.

I love my 32gb iPhone! I've only had it a few days and I'm still learning how to use it but I can't stop playing with it!!
Aww, a boy and his toy.

I have an iPod and find that the most ridiculously useful thing there is. I can browse the web, get email, find stuff, use it as a flashlight (I've actually done it), get my horoscope, use it for bilateral stimulation exercises, go on IRC, use IM programs, orient myself to the night sky, watch TV episodes, movies, listen to music and podcasts, and it's a true PDA! I use it commuting, before and during chemo, view pictures, in my car, and even watch porno. It is one of the most perfectly useful things I own. The only downside is it doesn't have a camera. The whole phone thing is way too expensive for how little I use a cell phone so I just have a pay-as-you-go plan phone. Carrying both doesn't suck.

So even if you don't get the iPhone, get an iPod anyway.

Definitely get one with as much storage space as possible because with a simple cable you can buy at the Apple store, you can watch content from your iPod on your TV (HD or otherwise). Makes a great way to use sneakernet to download and watch movies, TV, porn, or anything else. Plus you can put your music through your HT system.

I got a 3g 8g two months ago and it's awesome. I never thougbt i'd get one but after comparing phones and at&t lowering the price to $99, there was no better deal. The phone itself is just awesome. I was frustrated at first having to deal with itunes but it just too getting use to. If nothing else it takes awesome pics better than my kodak. I have about 50 apps on mine, 200 songs, and about one hour of different porn vids and haven't used half my space yet. I'll never use another phone. Hasn't dropped a call yet. Get an otter box case, it protects best. If my pc crashed today i'm not sure i'd replace it.

I quite like the BlackBerry Storm https://www.vodafone.ie/df/shop/Pro...cted=368035&offerSelected=portins&action=view

Hmmmmm interesting, I like being classy, and easy.

Now this is a logic I can get behind this way I get a phone and an ipod....... unleasing my inner demon of greed.......

Am I the only person out there who is still using a cheap ass Walmart phone that you add minutes to when you need em? LOL

I have had this damn thing for years and it always works and honestly I have only had one call dropped the entire time I have had it and that was when I was driving through a mountain pass and there were 10,000 ft peaks on either side of me.

I pulled it out the other day and this chick at work looked at the thing like it was a stone age relic...and said "you REALLY need to get a new phone."

Not at all. I have a Tracphone. It's dirt cheap. My first was $10 and oops, I dropped it. Boo fucking hoo. Then I left the charger cable at Nick8's house while he was out of town. So I bought another one that was easier to use for $20. the Tracphone people moved the number within half an hour. I add minutes with cards or even right from the phone and it works everywhere. If it gets lost or stolen then I don't care. I make maybe 2 or 3 cell calls a week and keep them short. It works for what I need a phone for and I don't have to pay for all these minutes I'm never going to use.

I'm looking to get the Nokia N96, unless Motorola comes out with something better. I got my iPhone3G thinking it was going to be the bomb! Well, it's a bomb, allright. This thing is capable of *SO* much, yet Apple has crippled the hell out of it. Someone has a ringtone you just gotta have? BlueTooth it over to your iPhone! WAIT!! Apple has crippled that function so you can't do it. If you want cool ringtones, you must purchase and download them from the iTunes store. THEN you must connect your phone to iTunes which MUST be connected to the internet so it can charge you AGAIN to make your ringtone work. So you paid twice for the same ringtone. It's capable of sending stereo music to your BlueTooth but it's also disabled. Citing short battery life. Want to move a file from your computer to another using your iPhone? Not happening. Sure the iPhones is very capable of it, yet Apple doesn't want you doing it via BlueTooth or direct connection. Why? Then there's the conversion process that iTunes must do to your music so it can be played in your iPhone. iTunes had the audacity to tell me that I did not own the copyrights to the music I created with my own keyboard and sequencers. It will not let you play MIDI files on your iPhones like any other phone will. iPod and iPhones will not support Ogg Vorbis yet Apple says it wants to take an open source approach to this. Yeah, right. It frequently locks up or freezes which forces me to do a hard reset of the phone. It takes FOREVER to boot up. Heaven forbid I should have a need to make a 911 call then, I'd be screwed!! If you have to do a hard reset to a hard reset (which happens) then it requires you to connect it to iTunes to be re-activated before you can do anything with it. This is never convenient when you're out and about. IF it didn't make you do the re-activation thing, and is working, all those apps you downloaded? Turned off. Again you have to connect it to iTunes before they will work again. Don't EVER tell iTunes that you don't want to back up the apps you've already downloaded. It will erase them. It does not support any flash player so watching something other than YouTube isn't going to happen. Downloading something off the net to store in the phone to transfer later to the computer? Not happening. The movies? Apple makes you rent them. You can't buy them to keep. Fortunately, there's a cool DVD copying/conversion program that let's you do this. Talking on the phone using the speakerphone so you can surf the net? Also not happening. It's one or the other, not both. The WIFI function? Slow to pick up, quick to drop. All that fame glamour and glitz this iPhone is supposed to bring you? Haven't seen any of it. Probably because people see me cursing this thing trying to get it to work at all. I'm tellin' ya, IF I still have this thing when the warranty is up, I have a kickass jailbreak program that's going in it and it is open source. I've seen this program in action and it is flawless. Let's the iPhone do what it's capable of. I cannot recommend this to anyone.
