This is a very solid page prepared by Media Matters for America and featuring some of the big names involved in the conspiracy theory about Obama's birthplace and ineligibility to serve as president.

I saw the interview on Lou Dobbs a couple days ago in which guest host Kitty Pilgrim lists exhaustively the current proof that Obama being born in Hawaii. On the "birther" side sat perennial contender but continuously falling short candidate Alan Keyes and, get this, lawyer slash dentist slash real estate agent Orly Taitz. (Work them jobs, girl!) They basically restated that the evidence wasn't good enough; never mind that, in this country, if you bring a charge against someone, it's your burden of proof.

What do you guys think of this stuff?

Hey the Duggar family!! oops

Anyway I think there is such a visceral hatred and polarization that the same debate would go on if John McCain were President. Since he was born in the Panama Canal Zone...

The wonderful power of belief, is that it requires no evidence. "I believe he wasn't born in the usa," therefore, there is nothing that can be presented to make that person see any evidence.

Offtopic, but, Alan Keyes is just plain crazy.

I am so sick of this conspiracy theory crap I don't know what to do. :irked: Be rest assured if he were not an American citizen one of the many allegedly secret spy agencys would have uncovered and publicized it long before now.

Oh, I know. *sigh* And there was no Holocaust, and 9/11 was a US gov't plot, and the moon landing never happened...

Just curious... has any other president before Obama been forced to generate a birth certificate on a public form before?

    No, not to my knowledge.

Have you noticed that there are parallells between the people who believe Obama's certificate of live birth is fake and the police who arrested Henry Louis Gates Jr. in Cambridge after he showed them his Mass. drivers license and his Harvard University work i.d. ?

Good to see that someone else notices the similarities.
We basically have a small (but insanely loud) group of people who can't accept the fact that certain people, different from themselves, can actually live in a nice home, have a nice car, or even reach the highest level of government without being a liar, cheater or a thief. What's worse is that those who can control the noise don't. Something like this should have been stifled out a LONG time ago. Yet, the conservative base allows these people to stir the hate mongering pot without any kind of concern. They assume the more opposition against Obama, the better for their own causes. Unfortunately, they're more obsessed with quantity than quality right now and that's going to haunt them come 2010 or even 2012.

    NJ,

I hate to go here, but it really is inescapable. The Birthers at first seemed just fringe lunatics, similar to the 9/11 and moon landing hoax conspiracy theorists.

Yet, the continuing, visceral need to challenge the legitimacy of the Obama presidency by these individuals is really troubling. I think it really is time to call these people out as racists. (Alan Keyes is just crazy, and a media whore.) I don't make this charge easily. Race is still a difficult issue in our society, and there are plenty of examples of real racism *and* ungrounded charges of racism for political or personal ends. I just cannot otherwise explain why people cling to these ideas in the face of overwhelming, incontrovertible proof that President Obama was born to a US citizen mother, in the state of Hawaii, in 1961.

In addition to the bigots (self-ware or not), there are the facilitators, like Rush Limbaugh or Lynn Cheney who wink at the 'controversy' for either monetary or political goals. These people know this all false, but are attempting to thwart Obama using any means available. Anyone who remembers the 'Hillary Clinton had Vince Foster murdered' issue from the 90s knows this dirty trick.

Good post, sparky. But I'd like to pose a serious question to you, NJ and anyone else with an objective mindset. As much as we know where this kind of hate generates, do you think it would be wise for key liberals and Democrats to engage in the same labeling and name calling that these fringe right wingers dabble in? One of the main reasons why Obama won the election is because he was good at avoiding much of the mudslinging. Part of me wishes to see someone grab a mic, not candy coat their words and really take these hate mongering people to task. But wouldn't that just infuriate both sides more?

I'd like to see that happen too; but I agree it would only serve to anger both sides even more. Then again, how often is one expected to turn the other cheek or take the high road in situations like these?

I think they should be publicly laughed at and fearlessly ridiculed as folks who are so TRANSPARENTLY racist that they no longer even qualify as white- they qualify as clear.

I think they should be shouted down, and escorted from the building wherever they appear.

Wait- FIRST they should be forcibly adorned with a tinfoil hat, and THEN escorted from whatever building in which they appear.

And when one starts talking on camera in one of those split screen things with the commentator in the other shot... the guy in the other shot ought to be waggling one finger in a circle near his temple while he fluppers his lips with another in the universal hand sign for batshit crazy.

And ANY republican official who does not determinedly shoot down this shit ought to be run out of office on a rail at the soonest electoral opportunity.

I want to see a political campaign ad that features a montage of the most egregious of these imbecilic rants put to the theme song from the three stooges, or the Looney tunes theme.

Arguing with them doesn't work... the only thing that shuts people up in their stupidity is the feeling that they are being laughed at and making a fool of themselves.

I was required to produce a valid, certified birth certificate to get a driver's permit for my oldest kid.

I think it is INCREDIBLY suspicious that a President cannot produce a valid copy of the most basic, essential piece of American identification that there is.

42 out of our 44 presidents were not forced to produce this documentation on a public form. That includes both Both Bush Jr. & Sr., Clinton, Reagan, Nixon, JFK and many others. You honestly believe that our government is that fucked up that they would allow someone who wasn't born in our country even RUN for president, never mind win the whole thing and serve close to a year in office?

It's not logical, people... ABSOLUTELY NOT LOGICAL.

Are you serious? You believe those wingnuts?! For shame Not_Punny, I thought you were smarter than that. :frown1: President Obama has already submitted a certificate of live birth as well as newspapers that printed his birth annnouncement. Do yourself a favor, stop listening to talk radio and watching Fox news.

Our country is guilty of many illogical things, but this isn't one of them. IMO former V.P. Dick Cheney would have been the first one to investigate Barack H. Obama, 5 years ago at the Democratic convention where he spoke so eloquently.

    Tell me you're joking... please.

You realize that he DID provide one, Right? A Photo of his REGISTERED birth certificate was posted online.
Please explain to me the twisted thinking it takes to imagine that is insufficient?
What?- Obama has to pass around the ORIGINAL document to every stupid bastard that doubts? You think the birther morons would accept THAT? OR just suggest that its been faked?
At what point and what level of disclosure would YOU be convinced that ANY document he provided was genuine?

You do realize that a conservative group DID investigate and found that the info on the Birth Certificate that Obama POSTED ONLINE matched 48 year old official records in the State of Hawaii, right? ( the agency that ISSUES birth certificates )

You do know that a microfiche ( remember those? ) search they conducted of the local paper in the town Obama was born found a BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT corresponding to the date Obama was born, right?

So your contention is that it is suspicious that there is a 40 year old photograph on file at a library of record in hawaii showing a picture of a newspaper published the week Obama was born... NAMING him as a new birth?

    Here's the REAL conspiracy question...

ALL these fucktard birthers need do to get Obama out of office is waltz down to the county records office in Hawaii and SHOW that there is no record on file of his birth.

That's is ALL they have to do, and Obama is disqualified from office.

OR- they can look into the records at the hosptial where he was born, and show that no such child was born there, and his mother never a patient on the day his "birth records' claim.

That is all it takes to PROVE something fishy.

So why haven't any of these stupid fucks done that?

Because they know full well what they will find. A valid record of live birth for the current president as an American citizen.

OH- and BTW- being born on foreign soil does not preclude you from being a US citizen, nor president.

Any child of any US ambassador, born on foreign soil, can get a valid certificate of birth as US citizen.
And the same holds true for ANY child of ANY US citizen... you just have to file the paperwork.

Your children do not LOSE their status as US citizens just because you go into labor overseas.

I think if you insert the world "black" in front of the word President whenever they say something you start to understand...

"I think it is INCREDIBLY suspicious that a Black President cannot produce a valid copy of the most basic, essential piece of American identification that there is."

It's the same loony segment of the population who believed the Clintons had Vince Foster killed and were running cocaine out of Mena, Arkansas.

Same old angry idiots shouting into their own echo chamber.
