It does seem rather hypocritical of them to castigate her for the very things they praised in Kate Middleton.

Like you, I don't follow celebrity stuff but have a tangential awareness of it thanks to oversaturation. But over the years, the press in general has harassed, harangued, assailed, and all out bombarded the royal couples to an appalling degree. They've especially gone out of their way to crucify her in the papers every chance they get. I'm not surprised nor do I blame her for her disdain for them.

I totally get why Megan and Harry want to step down. I can’t even imagine living like that. Every move criticized, every act has a rule. Good for them. However, the Queen did call a “crisis meeting” today to deal with their insolence. I hope they make good their escape, though.

Let them go and be happy. They appear to be truly in love.

And that seems to be enough for them to want to step down from their Royal duties. Doesn't mean they won't still be Royals.

Who knows? Maybe they'll actually be able to escape the fishbowl. I hope so.

Diana was killed because the paparazzi chased her. High speed, an intoxicated chauffeur and the fact that the three who died in the car had not fastened their safety harnesses (the one who survived had fastened his seatbelt even tho the engine ended up in his lap in the front seat) contributed to it, but the crash itself would not have happened had their been no chase.

Everyone who ever bought a Fleet Street rag for royal gossip or tuned in to watch it "on telly" put a nail in her coffin. The nationwide guilt trip following her death was stunning.

The reason to end the monarchy is to save these people's lives.

I've never understood the obsession with celebrities or the Royal family. I just can't understand the compulsion to know everything about someone like that.

I get angry when I see this kind of crap in the media when really..?? There are so much more important things going on.

Let them step down, and maybe focus on things that are actually urgent news. Like oh, I dunno, maybe something like the climate crisis? I have no idea why that shit isn't constantly blaring on those outlets but they can't shut up about stupid crap like this. Actually, I do have an idea. They care more about ad revenue than they do about actually informing the population, and the population cares more about who some royal guy is fucking/married to anyway. (I'm venting here, not talking to anyone specific)

Humanity makes me depressed.

I don't care who left the Royal family. I don't care about their baby. I don't care about any of it. Because it doesn't matter.

I had this very conversation with another on here about Princess Diana's death. I would say that a certain amount of guilt could be ascribed to all parties: the drunk chauffeur, Dodi and Lady Di for not having their seatbelts on (though at the speed they crashed, the effectiveness of seatbelts may have been negligible), but I think the lion's share of culpability belongs to the press for harassing and goading them into driving in that manner.

At this point, people should have asked themselves where do you draw the line on freedom of the press? It is not a sacrosanct thing; there should be hard limits on what they are allowed to do. Of course, the idea of freedom of the press was supposed to allow them the unfettered ability to report the news, but when the news is all owned by special interests, it becomes the freedom to ruin other peoples' lives and satisfy the prurient, gossip-hungry masses without consequence. At this point there needs to be a hard boot heel brought down upon their necks and severe restrictions on their behavior.

Although relevant to the thread, I'll refrain from too much soapbox postulating; remember that the very same thing could very well happen to Meghan and Harry should the authorities not rein in the press' behavior.

@Tight_N_Juicy Total agreement there. Sandwiched in between all the lies and propaganda are wafers of fluffy, meaningless gossip. I can't understand celebrity news myself either. Though besides the money generated by selling gossip, it probably also serves as a good distraction to keep the masses from focusing too much on how we're being taken to the cleaners by the powers that be.

America! Watch Harry and Meghan! The Kardashians! You're getting sleepy.....SLEEPY.....

I was surprised tbh and a little shocked them stepping down, Meghan should've been well aware of what's expected of a royal and all the royal duties that go with it, now the burden of their duties will have to be taken up by the other royals.
It's a brave move imo, it didn't work for Andrew or Diana and I if they think they're going to make a living off the back of their royal status just watch the queen strip Meghan of her HRH in a heartbeat.
They think they didn't like the media coverage they had, well just watch what'll happen when they're a media free for all!
Apart from that the security implications of living in Canada are going to cost millions, who'll be paying for that I wonder!

Paying for their security is a good question. News today said it’s about $100,000 a day for their security detail. Better not fall on us as taxpayers.

How do we know she wasn't? Why is it any of our business? Why can't they just be married and have their own private life without having to be harassed by society for doing what everyone what in the world does? Ya know... Exist?

I'm not trying to be hostile, everyone is free to have their own opinion but I couldn't not comment after reading what I quoted.

Should she just ignore the care she has for her partner, which he returns, for the sake of making things easier for the Royal family and the racist fucks who can't shut up about their relationship?

Harry's not a royal, his father was riding instructor. Obvious. Which gives him better genetics. Also obvious.

If you live in a world where princess Diana doesn't have a redheaded brother Charles who looks very much like Harry and you want to be incredibly rude, sure, you could go with the gossip instead.

Yeah, the way i was told she did know. And it was her dude who said they could work it out.

[“For me, and for my wife, of course, there is a lot of stuff that hurts, of course when a majority of it is untrue,” he told Bradby. “I will not be bullied into playing a game that killed my mum.”]

Which i big time respect.

[“It’s not enough to just survive something, right? That’s not the point of life. You’ve gotta thrive, you’ve got to be happy, and I think I really tried to adopt the British sensibility of the stiff upper lip,” she said, before exclaiming, “I tried! I really tried, but I think that what that does internally is probably really damaging.”]

Which i also respect big time. They gave it a go and received even worse press than his mom. Over a long span of time.

[“The biggest thing I know is that I never thought that this would be easy, but I thought it would be fair,” said Meghan. “And that’s the part that’s really hard to reconcile.”]

To me it's more than understandable. Though i think this is funny.

'Shame on Everybody': Hillary Clinton Acknowledges That Racism Is 'Certainly Part of' the Treatment of Meghan Markle

Pretty sure she knows a thing or two about being unfairly targeted. :p As far as bills go. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. If there were more people against her treatment none of this would have happened. So yeah, people should pay for them. That's kind of what happens anyway with kings and queens.

I don't care about titles. I would do the same she did. I would say "Thank you for your hospitality", then I would grab my stuff/money and leave.

They are rich. Their life will be cooler without all that Royal Family crap. Not everyone likes to have their life as a showcase in a zoo, because this is what that family is.

I can't imagine that kind of life. Every move you make is scripted, examined, and criticized. Everything has a rule or restriction around it. Wear this, don't wear that. Look at this person, but not that person. It's insane. I think Harry is very much his mother's son. She did what she wanted and didn't care what anyone thought about it. He's doing the same. I think both of them will be happier for it.
