What the title says.

we’re lucky enough in Australia for these shorts to still be normal, they never really went out of style except for a small period in the mid 2000s.

In Europe, wearing short shorts is still ok. But I feel for you guys in the US. The “shorts” you have are a joke.

I think the tide might be turning there though. Hopefully it continues.

Feel free to share stories about men’s shorts in the 70s/80s as well.

Well, buddy, opening a new thread should contain something visually at least or something to read because you ask for stories. Being so used of those hot pants as you say- why don 't you tell us a story at first? That would be the right beginning! Cheers- Ted

ok

I grew up watching my dad make his own cutoff shorts out of old jeans he had. I’d always watch him measure out the inseam of around 2 inches. Sometimes he’d accidentally go shorter and make the inseam 1.5-1.75 inches by mistake. He still does that til this day.

my junior football coach in the mid 2000s wore his old footy shorts from the 1980s all the time. The were very short. I liked to watch him too, especially when he was sitting down in front of us.

it’s just very normal for short shorts here in Australia. I’m surprised that the US has a modesty issue.

Rugby shorts were part of our school's sports uniform. You had to have a good pair of briefs on because the shorts were so short and it was so easy to see up the legs when were were all sitting on the football field doing warm ups. As a teen theses shorts were great in world free of quick internet porn.

Those shorts need to make a comeback

So glad they’re still around in Australia. Pretty common for footy shorts to be worn in summer.

did you get to see much looking up the shorts?

yes those shorts helped me discover i was gay. Lots of teen bulges and erections were difficult to hide.

Wearing of shorts (and short ones at that) as everyday clothing is unique to Aus/NZ. The trend took off after WW2 with servicemen returning from tropical places where shorts had been issued. Realising shorts were comfortable and practical in our climate, they took off in the late 1940's. I can, and do, wear footy shorts every day everywhere, and it's just totally normal. You can always spot the Aussie or Kiwi - they're the ones wearing short shorts in winter LOL. The strong football culture here is what keeps short shorts alive - footy shorts have to be short and tight by the nature of the game. As a result, there's a sweet irony in that wearing such shorts is seen as quite macho.
Quite contrary to the U.S. where adult men wearing shorts is not the norm, even in hot climate areas. And when they do, they're these baggy things, cargo shorts or derivatives of basketball shorts, all made to hide as much of the leg as possible, while still being classified as 'shorts'. A lot of cultures still consider shorts 'immature' or 'disrespectful'; something to be only worn in a gym or walking along the beach.

yep! Love the story.

and yeah here in Australia, wearing footy shorts is completely normal too and is seen as a manly thing. I don’t think I could live in the US, purely because they don’t have proper shorts haha

In the UK I usually wear the shorts pictured here to cycle to the village shop for the newspaper, eggs and milk unless it is too cold in which case I wear cycling tights, also commando.
