I wonder if there is a causal relationship in some cases between the need to compensate for self-consciousness by chasing down the higher paying jobs? Conversely, that men who are comfortable with their size are less likely to want to pull down a bigger salary in order to impress others?*

We'll never know the answer to this, of course. As with many behavioural phenomena, the individual cases have numerous variables that are often impossible to control experimentally. However, I do find it mildly interesting to think about these silly things.

And I just made myself laugh by thinking that, for a position that requires a doctoral degree, my job is one of the least well-compensated!

I don't think we'll ever objectively know, but I think there are underlying truths when we look at the commonly held tropes of overcompensation demonstrated by either gender. I suspect you could switch the penis size metric with height and get similar results in that men whom dont naturally possess certain generally accepted tenets of masculine attraction(height, musculature, penis size, facial features/symmetry, etc.) are certainly motivated to work that much harder on the obtainable tenets such as fame, economic stability and success, and influence/power as attractive qualities for building one's own foundation and for attracting mates.
I suspect the trope about women's sexual tenacity and willingness being inversely proportional to how much they conform to mens sexual gaze and beauty standards is the other side of this coin.

I also played football in high school and college. I once read that men who'd been active in sports had an advantage in the job market. When I first started working right out of college, managers gave me a lot more attention than I probably deserved. Either they'd been in sports at one time and it established a bond of some sort, or they hadn't and there was some sort of fascination about being around an athlete. Dunno.

Although I was competitive in sports, I never felt especially so otherwise. It maybe just gave me a sense of confidence about myself. I never felt there was much truth in the "small-penis-compensation" thing. At least in my case. My personality was established before I hit puberty and became aware of my shortcomings.
