HOney,

I dont care what you go through. The final results are worth every minute! Beauty must be maintained .be it masculine or feminine. Embrace your inner Beau Brummell!
If I were to place you within the Prep spectrum I would call you an "Aesthete extraordinaire" ! LOL!

What's wrong with the term "metrosexual." I fit the bill and I'm proud of it. Just because I go to fancy salons to be pampered, I have way too many expensive clothes, I take a long time to get ready, I have manners and good breeding, doesn't make me less of a man, nor do I think it's a slam on anyone else.

Most of my friend are all pretty much the same way. I guess the old adage is true that "birds of a feather flock together..."

Metro and proud!

You'd have (at one time) been called a "dandy".

Perhaps you're attention to detail and and your interest in fastidious dress is your 10%??:biggrin1:

Exactly, Though I dont "bend it like Beckham" I have been known to "dress like Disraeli" or "work it like Wolfe"( Tom that is). I have ties, spectators, boaters and lots of white linen jackets with weskits galore... Here is the test to determine if you are truly a dandy: www.dandyism.net, I just use the 80's term "New Romantic" (I.e. Duran Duran, Adam Ant, Johnny Depp) and call it a day.

Romaine Brooks, the female dandy

However ,unlike Romaine, I am 100% heterosexual female. Perhaps that is why female Scorpios are often "Most likely hetero female to be mistaken for a lesbian..."

Here is yet another good answer I've found today to my own question....

I really enjoyed your article, and in pondering the question of whether a woman can be a dandy I really think she cannot. I believe the equivalent of a woman to a dandy would be the woman described as being chic. Although a chic woman may sometimes venture into menswear (I've been known to don a man's suit at times), it is usually done with a wink and a tres gamine air. A chic woman is a woman who can pull off a very simple outfit and yet somehow look very pulled together. It's a total look she is able to achieve with seemingly little effort. Jackie Kennedy was (in my opinion) a prime example of the chic woman. She (the chic woman) is very different from the dandy, however. A dandy is the male peacock. He is (usually) dressed up rather than dressed down (which the chic woman often is). He has mastered the art of the strut (no minor feat) where she has mastered the art of understatement (equally difficult).

To be honest, the political/intellectual threads on this forum often cause my head to swim and when the topic turns to artillery I'm lost, but I do love a well-dressed man and I have great respect for the chic woman as well. I do think they are different though, just as men and woman are.

As I am often the lone woman in this forum, I thought I'd offer my opinion on the matter, however humble.

Is as rare as she is irresistible.....and she need pay little or no heed to the need for conventional 'beauty' to achieve it.

They actually call men like Boccelli and Pavarotti "divo" now or "divi" in the plural.

I think it's a stretch and over-used.

I agree. The word has been misused to the point of contempt. I wish people would: 1) look words up, 2) use them correctly. Post Modernism be damned. If you are going to mess something up, do it on your own time....

The women from "Sex and the City" come to mind. They're successful, dress well, and indulge in the finer aspects of personal grooming. There are plenty of wannabes here in Wilmington. They all wear black, which i'm fond of, but don't seem to realize you can be chic in just about any color. They probably feel it's "safe"--you can't mess it up no matter how hard you try.

That is an observation I'll confirm and subscribe any time. They don't only copy the style of Sex and the City, they copy everything from this series: Style, language, behavior. Now the copying the style is okay, there have been worse TV series to use as role model, but the women who usually copy are doing a very bad job.

But I agree, the style that the women of Sex and the City incorporate is very close to a female edition of metrosexuality.

Accurate or not....and it would apply to straight or gay men....my first impression of what a metrosexual male was, is a man who is Not in touch with, or confident in, his masculinity....too neutral behavior.....too hairless (by his choice)......he couldn't possibly be seen in any way, shape, or form as aggressive toward women (not referring to a bad sort of aggression)......
What testosterone ?!
Impossible for me, personally, to feel any chemistry with.

Not sure what a female version of that would be.

As I see it, Metrosexuality in its pure form has been passed by by fashion and society meanwhile anyways, just another short-lived trend.

Again, I think it's nothing bad if a man takes some care of himself and his appearance, but like with everything, there's a line beyond which he has to sustain being smiled at. In my eyes, a man needs some rough edges, being too smooth and too slick won't make him attractive.

Claire,

I think the term may have become passe but the lifestyle has always been around. I think it probably is just an extension of the personality and creativity of its practioner. it can also be a cultural thing.Certain cultures are very amenable to the men paying attention to their appearance. THough there are many gay men who are quite fastidious, there are also many hetero males who are just peacocks and couldnt be anything else if they tried. I happen to find them delightful as long as there is substance along with the style...

I use it totally tongue and cheek. I am surrounded by men of taste and breeding

Taste and Breeding ??? Well that sounds pretty Victorian ! (wink)

I know people who are clueless when it comes to being well groomed and sophisticated yet they are beautiful.
And some pretty spiffy folk who are lonely because everyone else is beneath them.

I try to avoid any of the labels that are being used.
To say someone is Straight is to indicate someone of another persuasion is ... Off, Crooked, Twisted or missing the mark in some way.

What is Gay and where did that term originate ?
You ask people who have summed up the whole essence of themselves with this word for years and yet haven't a clue as to where it originated.

I'm just me... plain and simple. I am not my job , my car, my house, my anything. I am many changing thoughts and ideas wrapped in flesh and blood just trying to muddle along as best I can. Get to know me if you want but don't try to figure me out by asking me to define myself with a word someone from People magazine made up just to to fill a gap in this months issue.

While I never thought the term (metrosexual) was intended as something derogatory, i think it is yet another label used in an attempt to define that which is often indefinable.

The drawback is that once labels are applied to someone, they are often followed with the usual assumptions and stereotypes associated with the label. And often the ones most guilty of being judgemental and those who most object to being judged.

Such classifications fail to take into account all the various elements that influence human behavior.

Presumably, as metrosexual is a term for men you might assume were gay but aren't, the opposite would be a woman you assume is a lesbian but isn't.

The ideal of lesbians looking and acting in a certain identifiable way seems a minefield.

Now this is an interesting thread I'm glad it got bumped. I think woman were raised as girls that it is good to primp and prune and pluck and wax and wane and do all of the things necessary to look naturally beautiful. Men on the other hand were discouraged as boys from doing this. The whole term Metrosexual is just a slick Madison Avenue Advertising catch phrase to help straight men feel comfortable using the products and indulging in the regimes of ultra- grooming while making it less gay sounding. I have been ultra-grooming for years before this phrase came along, once you have had a professional manicure, pedicure, massage and facial you become addicted to it.
