I don't see it as a insecurity issue as Dr. Rock put...I do it for myself...Actually I have very dry and sensitive skin hence why I even started w/anything on my face and body...I get my haircut or trimmed every week because it is a habit from my old career which I have not broken - I like to look groomed at all times...It was also part of my job to have manicured nails too so that stuck...Sorry mavedick but I stopped washing my hair w/bar soap as a kid - it would dry my scalp out too much...My mother started me on being well groomed as a child so it is a habit now...And the girls I like I guess are into the metrosexual look because I never approach them - they approach me...And I am not a homosexual or into a gay lifestyle so I guess the metrosexual terminology has to fit here (LOL)...

:shrug: I don't see the point in putting a bunch of crap on your skin / hair / whatever. just seems like insecurity to me - why bother unless you don't feel you look "good enough" already?

society glorifies superficiality in all things, most of all appearance - and moreso now than at any point in history. predictably, people now are more obsessed with the details of their appearance than ever before. for too many people, the cosmetic fetish isn't even so much about how one appears to other people as how one appears to ONESSELF - hence the obvious insecurity issue.

So true, so true about society. This is truly an aside, but has anyone seen that TV show "The Swan" on FOX?...Just as society was recognizing how much unrealistic pressure is put on women to look like supermodels they come out with this show that chisels this, liposucks this, lasers this, crash-diets this so that the girls can compete against each other at the end of the season. How do they compete? Well naturally everyone turns blonde and gets a C/D cup and looks basically the same (stereotypical magazine bombshell). Talk about good way of starting an anorexia/plastic surgery/teen suicide craze!

But on the metrosexual topic, personally I just think just another way of a little OCD coming out. I think everyone has a little bit of OCD in them in different ways, so it's not like I think metrosexualism is a bad thing. Now that it's highlighted a little more by reality TV, people that have been doing it for years seem a lot more able to discuss it and participate in it. Good for them... if you enjoy it and it's not about self-esteem issues I personally think it's healthy. But that's just me. And if girls are attracted to it, even better!

I had mixed feelings about this show...I actually knew one the girls who made it to the beauty paegent part...She is actually one of my friends wife...It did give an unrealistic image of women...But on the other hand it really helped some women w/physical and mental (self-esteem) issues...

I've never been in a tuxedo in my life, and hope I never am!

Not even for prom or have you even been a groomsmen in a wedding...Just a few times I have had to put on on...I actually own one but again I had to attend certain functions for work that black tie was required...

it's just feminin guys
[post=330998]Quoted post[/post]

No it's not feminine guys at all. It's guys who know how to take care of themselves, who know how to act with manners in public, know how to dress well, know how to groom themselves, know where to find the cool restaurants and clubs, know the great shopping areas, know the best salons, and the list goes on...

Amen, prepstud.

I would be considered metro and am anything if not masculine.

A feminine man is a feminine man.
A masculine man is a masculine man.
Sexulaity has little to do with it.

Masculinity is not the province of heterosexual men.
Fashion is not the province of women.
I am a masculine man who cares about his appearance and likes things that are nice.
I will not apologize for not being a slob.
I like some women and I like some men--and I like my women feminine and my men masculine.

I like my clothes neat and pressed, my cologne light and individual, and my head shaved and clean.

I am MAN, see me FLEX!! GRRRRRR. ;)

You got it Lex. Just because there are some neanderthals out there who have never put on a decent article of clothing, wouldn't know what to do with a bottle of moisturizer, or wouldn't dare spend over $20 on a pair of shoes doesn't mean that those of us who do makes us feminine. The poster boy of metros is Beckham and I would hardly call him feminine. If one goes to any major city on a weeknight, you would find the restaurants/bars swamped with us, the salons filled us, the gyms filled with us, the boutiques filled with us, before popping off to some little fancy gourmet shop to pick up something for dinner and racing home in our little European cars to meet more friends and/or our girlfriends/wives. Welcome to the world of a metrosexual.

I disagree when it comes to my friends...Not femimine at all...If anything most are very masculine alpha males...They just take pride in their appearance and are quite confidence...A lot of them are in the public eye so they want to look their best...Beck seems pretty masculine to me but who cares - most chicks want to bang him anyway so the metro thing must be working for him...

Pretty much all of them are really good looking guys that are really into their looks and clothes...I mean I have seen some of these guys and their girlfriends fight for the mirror and take just as long to get ready.

I have never thought much about the term metrosexual, but after reading this post, I now know that I have encountered at least one. I had a student who I aptly called "Fashion Plate." When he graduated, he told me that he was taking a somewhat menial job in a beach resort town so that he could live with a woman at least 10 years older than him. He met her in a bike shop when he was an intern one summer at a nearby company. Their relationship led to her divorce. He was very into fashion clothes. He was floored when I told him that I owned 4 Lacoste polo shirts with the authentic right facing crocodile logo. The Lacoste shirts with the tight fitting armbands were once the premier shirts to show off big upper arms and big pecs. That was before the baggy clothes fad of today which unfortunately hide both.

I'm still trying to recover over the bar of soap to wash the hair...that baffles me. I've never done that. Never worn a tuxedo? Wow. Even in college I was going to openings of events that required such things.
[post=330615]Quoted post[/post]

Do/did you carry your shampoos and conditioner to the gym shower with you? You would have been laughed out of any locker room in which I've ever been! My hair is just as clean as your--and it doesn't smell like apricots!

I managed to get three degrees from the top university in my state without ever attending any tuxedo events. I don't recall ever seeing my college friends in one either. No, we weren't hippies, but we weren't frat-rats or metrosexuals either--just ordinary young men. After that, I spent a career wearing neckties as a professional, headed a state professional society, and was twice elected to political office. Still no tuxes! I've seen them worn at a few fancy weddings, but not most of those that I attend, nor the one in which I was a best man.

haha. I wouldn't wear a tuxedo, and anyone who tried to tell me it was "required" clearly wouldn't know me very well :p

I can't get over how much I agree with Dr Rock in this thread and disagree with prepstudinsc. It's usually the other way around! :eek:

A metrosexual is someone who owns more than two hair products. And actually refers to all of them as "product". Basically it's a type of marketing scheme.

When would you wear a tux in college and what do degrees have to do with it...Maybe I am missing something here...I am sorry but there are sometimes or events where a tux would be required...I have worn them when in weddings, prom, and black tie events like charity events or galas where you would look like an idiot if you didn't wear a tux...I actually own one because it was just not cost effective to rent a tux all the time when I had a lot of events that required them...If you use shampoo and conditioner at home, why not bring it to the gym...Personally I really do not like to shower at the gym but my gym is right across the street from my loft so I shower at home...
