Miami's First Cold Weather Death Confirmed | NBC Miami

A 77-year-old man died of hypothermia Tuesday in what could be considered the first death in Miami that could be attributed to the record cold weather that has lingered in the city.
Wilfredo Arreyes died at Jackson Memorial Hospital and his roommate Miguel Alemon, 93, is still in critical condition after the two spent days in the frigid cold weather with no heat or covers in their apartment on Northwest 10th Avenue and Northwest 2nd Street in Little Havana.

    ----------------------------------

I don't understand how they didn't have any blankets or comforters or how the home could get that cold. Even when it gets to the low 30's at night it doesn't get below 65 inside. Many homes in south Florida don't even have heat.

I saw on the news that there was a recent mad run for space heaters and that stores were sold out of them. This Saturday it's supposed to go up to 80 degrees.

Yeah, that's crazy south Florida. Weather is so difficult to try and reason.

The shelters were open but many times people don't want to go to shelters as they fear for their safety. Responsibility is the key in any situation.

Many people in SoFL do not have heat (and why would you?). Bubba and I have a few friends from there who do not have heating units as a part of their central air.

    Yikes.
