it absolutely is. we're not baby cows; there is no reason to be drinking milk

asian descent in general. i'm half japanese, and i can't handle straight up milk without puking. and dairy products in general make my throat phlegmy and it makes my face break out. like i said, adult humans are not meant to consume milk

there's a reason why a woman stops lactating at a certain point. biologically, we mammals are just not meant to consume milk past a certain point in our developments. "what about calcium?" you ask? calcium is easy to obtain from a myriad of different sources, including many vegetables

Surferboy is 100% correct. Milk is produced by mammals for the sole purpose of providing their infant offspring with the nutrients required, until they are able to digest other types of food. Humans are not meant to, nor able to properly digest the milk from other animals. Nor are humans meant to drink milk, including human mothers milk, beyond this weening period. The molecular structure of each mammals milk varies from one animal to the next and in theory is not tolerable by others. Some people are more or less tolerant then others but all humans have some level of intolerance.

I am half austrian and half czech and still can not handle pure milk too well. Hmmmmmmmmm?

Of course there are lactose intolerant folks of Northern European heritage. The point is, is that North Europeans are the most lactose tolerant people in general terms.

Thanks for the responses!
Lactose intolerance is one thing but I even heard people say that milk can damage your immunity system! Quite the opposite effect of Calcium, ain't it?

finally, someone else knows what's up! a lot of people give me shit because of how against the consumption of milk i am. granted, part of it is from being by my grandma from okinawa, but still. milk just isn't good for you after toddlerhood.

actually, calcium doesn't strengthen the immune system. calcium is used to strengthen bones, but too much in your blood can be a bad thing. your body is constantly taking from the blood and putting it into the bones, or vice versa. it's all about homeostasis. i know the parathyroid hormone (PTH) is responsible for increasing calcium in your blood by taking it out of bones, while calcitonin decreases blood concentrations by bringing it into your bones (i used the suffix -in as my mnemonic device).

but as i said previously, there are plenty of non-dairy sources for calcium. here are two websites that should help anyone out that is curious about learning more:

Plant-Based (Vegan) Sources of Calcium vs. Animal Sources of Calcium

Non-Dairy Calcium Sources

you can easily find more by doing a quick google search

consumption of milk is so very unhealthy.

we've been brainwashed to think we benefit from the calcium and other nutrients but have you ever considered, humans are the only species that a) consume milk after weening b) regularly consume the milk of another animal?

also, the human body is a remarkable machine that knows how to balance its functions and chemical content. drinking milk regularly introduces a great volume of calcium which triggers the brain to tell your body to stop producing its own and in the extreme even dump calcium stores from its marrow. so while we're told about the benefits of calcium in milk we actually can trigger the onset of calcium deficiency as a result of ingesting it.

also, cow's milk is intended by nature to ween a 200 lb calf into a 600 lb calf in the time span of 3 months. that's a whole lot of fat needed to produce those results.

and don't get me started on the levels of chemicals, specifically antibiotics, found in cow's milk (and flesh) as a result of the treated feed the cows are fed.

if you need to, try rice or almond milk

slurper, you and i would get along so well =D

i'm amazed by how many people are not educated in regards to milk and all. and you're right, they add so many unnatural components, it's ridiculous. and i know this is slightly off topic, but not only are they giving our non-organically raised livestock steroids, growth hormones and antibiotics (which, in turn, creates super germs!) but they also feed them other animals! i mean, as if feeding cows corn wasn't bad enough (corn is not natural to a cow's diet. a cow does not know what corn is) but meat?! a cow was not designed to eat meat! they have flat teeth designed to eat plants!

"what kind of meat are they feeding them?" you ask? well...they're feeding them leftover mechanically chicken parts, road kill (possums and the like) and, the worst of all...other cows! it's so disturbing! that's why, unless it was raised organically, i don't eat farm animals. unfortunately, i don't have whole foods money. luckily, i love fish and tofu (yay being half japanese, right?) so i just go to the fish peddler down here every day and eat fish =D

I thought that the body's processing of the animal protein in milk produced sulfur as a byproduct -- and as the body leached the sulfur out, it also leached out calcium.
The result was that milk was considered a surprisingly poor source of calcium, just the opposite of what conventional wisdom says.
You're far better off getting calcium from leafy green veggies.

Hmmm. Just found a relevant website. How 'bout dat?

Jason and helgalina had it right early in the thread. As we grow into adults we generally become lactose intolerant. However, after we developed agrarian cultures with animal husbandry, we drank more milk as adults. So people from the cultures that did that very early (like longer than 5,000 years ago), evolved some degree of lactose tolerance as adults.

So depending on our ancient heritage, some of us have pretty good lactose tolerance as adults and some of us don't.

But none of the afore mentioned are connected with the diary industry.Drinking milk is just fine!!
???

Surely the people of the new nation of southern Sudan depend on drinking milk and also measure their wealth in cattle. And they are certainly not alone.

A milk cow does not begin her production until she has had at least one calf, which is taken from her and replaced by the milking of the dairy hand or machine. Excess or male calves become beef or veal. Lactose intolerance is handled by making cultured milk products, but the beef and dairy industries will never be separate unless you milk some other species.
