Does anyone know when/where the label missionary position as a specific sex act comes from? I've heard it my entire life so I know it has been around a long time. Still, when I've asked other folks about it, no one seemed to know.

supposedly many years ago some missionaries were on an island in the Pacific. the natives didn't know about and use the position used by the missionaries. hence, missionary position. they must have been voyeurs.

You can find out anything with Google-

"The missionary position was promoted by the Catholic Church during the middle ages. Thomas Aquinas was reportedly an advocate of the position as well. However, according to Alfred Kinsey the missionary position was coined by natives in response to Christian missionaries. Kinsey wrote in his book Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, “It will be recalled that anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski records the nearly universal use of a totally different sexual position among the Trobrianders in the Southwestern Pacific; and he notes that caricatures of the English-American position are performed around the communal campfires, to the great amusement of the natives who refer to the position as the ‘missionary position.’”
