If Mitchymo says "sorry I did X" he has indeed admitted fault.

If Mitchymo says "sorry that this incident has upset so many people on lpsg" he is expressing his concern for the upset and his personal willingness to seek a solution. Presumably the mods, people who have contributed to this thread and others could all say the same. He is not admitting fault. It is then possible to agree that Mitch and everyone else (including mods) look to improving good practice to see that similar cases don't happen. Presumably Mitch promises not to reveal the top secret info he learnt as a mod.

Some of the more enlightened UK workplaces use this sort of technique to resolve workplace conflicts. Why not here?

Sometimes its better just to bite your tongue though. If he really wants to come back, maybe itll be best for him to admit guilt. We all have our own opinion on him, and thats what is most important.
