The more important question is, Is that a relevant statistic considering how much larger the time frame is that we are not "at war."

Opening statement on the article states "1,38,171" as the number of people killed. It's the very first written part of the article. It's the entire crux of the argument, and they don't even type it correctly.

1,38,171.....with that level of editing I can't help but pass over the entire subject.

Things that are larger than the number of deaths in US wars:
6 years of suicide
2 years of accidents
4.5 months of heart disease

What is your point with this statistic?

Here is a statistic from me:
More people die from vending machines than from sharks.

you make a good point, i see that. But the article is saying something about our 2nd amendment. There isnt anything in the constitution about vending machines or accidents. Domestic gun deaths could be potentially prevented

interesting comments guys, but you are all skirting the issue. Surely you Americans have got to do something about gun control. Every time we hear of a shooting - in a school, movie theater or mall - the rest of the world looks at you guys in disbelief over your obsession with weapons.

Is that statistic not a wake-up call?

I guess probably not...

Stop paying attention to american news. You hear about these things because they are "exciting". You also hear about them because they are not common. There is a reason why when it happens it dominates the news for a week straight.

Do they happen? Yes. But considering the availability of guns they don't really happen that often. They would also probably happen less if there weren't areas in the country that are basically not policed. I mean seriously, homicide in the US would be nearly on the same levels of the UK if it weren't for the substantial crime hot spots that exist in the US.

Usually, it dominates the news for a week straight--until the next one takes its place.

We have discussed this issue so many times and often in an ill tempered manner.

I came to the conclusion that there is no problem in having a Federal right to own guns in the spirit of the Constitution, namely having some ability to protect freedom against a despotic government, but I do think that States should legislate individually as to the types of weaponry permitted and the right of where and how to carry, and how to keep for that matter.

America needs to learn from other countries, who have been established alot longer.

The #1 argument people make is that they want guns in case the govt turns all nazi and tries to take over its citizens....do you even know how the US works? its run by regular people. You could be a congressman, I could be a congressman. Nazi Germany in the USA will never happen.

Fast food kills more people than guns
It tends to be self-inflicted tho, with a fair amount of choice involved.

Haven't heard of anyone bursting into a school and killing loads of people by chucking buns at them...
