So now I will have to either modify my last theory or propose a companion theory. I think the companion theory works best.

As I may have mentioned, I am studying to become a Behavioral Consultant, and so I tend to see things through that lens. But once upon a time I was seriously thinking of becoming Occupational Therapists. Now I won't bore you with all that each entails, but the fields overlap regularly.

Like, a sensory or motor planning issue can be the "A" in the ABC sequence we behaviorists (and future behaviorists) are so fond of (ABC=Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence). So say an individual is having the behavior of, oh, I don't know, pounding their chins onto hard surfaces. The Antecedent could be that they are seeking to stimulate their sense of proprioception (basically the sense of your body's position in space that is tied with your vestibular and kinesthetic senses along with a few others)

Whereas most would feel pain, they are feeling pleasure through the activation of the proprioceptive stimuli they are getting via the jolts thru the joints (in this case jaws). The consequence is that their needs are met, making it more likely that they will do said behavior again (or the C now effectively joins or becomes the A)

So how does this apply to the convo at hand?

Well Subgrrl made me think: what if there is a difference in those of us who can get off thru what most people would consider painful? Is it like a form of Sensory Processing Disorder? Are our bodies, in these situations, interpreting data in funky ass ways, so that what would be a pain signal, is overridden my a pleasure signal?

Now I know with the individual with the habit of hitting his chin that we were able to modify the behavior by giving other options through which his sensory needs could be met. We also worked to modulate the way he processed the info in his body to start to seek the original stimulus less and less.

Seeing as how that can be done in one direction, why not the other? So say someone has an underlying disposition to interpret certain pain stimuli as pleasure? Now say that this happens accidentally in the course of something highly desirable, like, oh, sex. Now the initial reaction may be pain, releasing endorphins, blada, blada, blu, BUT the conversion from "hurts so good" to "feels good period" may be faster do to the underlying processing patterns of the brain.

Sorry for the ramble, but it may be something to think about.

I've studied behaviourism, so both these theories (shortened because this post is getting rather long) make a lot of sense to me.

This is pure speculation, but what if some of us are particularly susceptible to endorphins and whatever other hormones are released by sex? For those who are more susceptible, the pain may be subsumed in the rush of endorphins more easily than in others. Similar to in your second theory, but more endorphin focused, and less pain focused. And if all those things are combined in some people . . . Someone needs to do a study on this stuff!
