I just read that "kids these days" are ingesting morning glory seeds because apparently they have hallucinogenic qualities.

As an avid gardener, I'm instantly intrigued by any horticultural trivia, but this one seemed too outlandish and frighteningly easy.

While I have no interest in trying it, I was curious if anyone else has.

Your backyard may be a danger zone for your teenager, especially if you happen to be growing Morning Glories. These beautiful blooming flowers, also known as heavenly blue, crimson rambler and pearly gates have seeds that contain Lysergic Acid Amide that gives an LSD-like high when swallowed by the hundreds, and kids are gaining this knowledge all too fast. The age of the internet puts information into the hands and minds of kids at such a rapid pace that most parents can barely keep up with the new trends and fads that come and go.

The Morning Glory fad is not a new trend by any means; in fact it was one that grew heavily in the 60's with the hippy era. The seeds of these flowers were often used as a hallucinogen by teenagers looking for a cheap high. The morning glory seeds, containing Lysergic Acid Amide is found to be one-tenth as potent as LSD. The seeds are brown or black and may be eaten whole or ground up, but when the seeds are eaten whole, the effects will be smaller than when they are chewed or ground up.

When the seeds are chewed up, the effects of the drug will take affect within 30 to 90 minutes of ingestion with results that mimic taking LSD. If Lysergic Acid Amide is extracted from the seeds, it can be injected to produce a more immediate and intense experience, and too many children are aware of this. Morning Glory seeds are available to kids at just about any retailer, but store owners have taken some precautions, such as changing the bar code on the seeds so that the supply can be monitored when a teenager is attempting to purchase them in bulk.

The physical effects of ingesting Morning Glory seeds can have a large range of affects varying from anxiety or panic attacks, distortion of time, space and body image, difficulty concentrating and thinking clearly, severe mood swings, often ranging from a hyper-interested mood to a withdrawn disinterested mood, questionable behavior resulting from the confusion, panic, and paranoia that the drug produces when ingested, toxic psychosis from children suffering from depression, and death.

    Morning Glory (Ipomoea spp.) Information
To get an idea of what to expect, read some of the experiences written by morning glory seed users. As with LSD, good and bad experiences are possible. The best way to ensure positive results is pay attention to proper set and setting.
The most common way of ingesting morning glory seeds for their psychoactive effect is to grind them with a mortar and pestle (or something else that will do the same job). You can mix the ground up seeds in some water and consume them like that, or put them in gelatin capsules.
There are about 40 morning glory seeds per gram of material. The first time you try them, about 80 seeds or 2 grams should be consumed. If you do not feel much, increase the dose by 80 seeds (2 grams) each time you try (wait 5 days between attempts), until you find a dose size you like.
Ingestion of morning glory seeds will cause some amount of nausea in most people. Anyone interested in isolating LSA in a more pure form (in order to minimize nausea and other problems) may wish to preform an LSA extraction.
All parts of the morning glory plant are legal in the USA but extracted LSA is a controlled (illegal for most people) substance. Persons residing in the US (and other countries where LSA is illegal) should refrain from any type of extraction because of the legal restrictions.
Like hawaiian baby woodrose and ololiuqui seeds (which also both contain LSA), morning glory seeds that contain LSA should not taken by pregnant women because they may cause a miscarriage. These types of seeds may also cause problems, and should not be consumed by people with liver problems like hepatitis and jaundice.

Pffft! We have wild morning glories all over! We have even more Jimson Weed, mugwort, myrtle, and belladonna, and psilocybin mushrooms appear in the old cow patties after rain. If you know what you're looking for, you can get high off of a lot of things growing all over the eastern US.

Packaged seeds are likely to have fungicides, germination retarders, or other chemicals on them.
