One thing that's common where I live in Canada is plugging in your car during the winter time. I told a friend from the southern states that once, and she thought I was joking.

So who else has block heaters? And who doesn't?

Most Americans will never care about soccer.

WHAT??? Aw, come on. That is just wrong....might be true, I dunno, but I love soccer and played it in high school, and still play pick up games near me....totally depends on who you are and where you are!

Most American think that all hispanics come from Mexico

Oy, wrong. I mean, come on. Only if you live states bordering or near Mexico. I'm up in the northeast ....Mexico is not the first pick for naming country origin based on accent/language. Cuba, Costa Rica....not Mexico. Maybe there's some sort of national divide, like North and South? lol

:) Too funny. I play for the fun of it. lol. Just teasing. There are pockets of soccer lovers -- the other football, I guess, in the US. Blah, stereotypes. They really are odd.

Most "americans" will never realize there is more than one country in America.

Btw I've done everything on the op's list, what did I win?

Huh? more than one country in America? I give up. What's the other country in America??? Are you referring to the United States and the territories? Guam, Puerto Rico, Philippines and such? I sure hope that most American's realize this because I think it's taught in 4th grade.....

wait, what am I saying....wasn't there a Miss America who didn't know much about countries and so on??

embarrassing. really.

Last time I checked America had 35 countries in it, the united states is only one of them.

As I travel, and when I read boards like LPSG, I've subconsciously been making a list of how Americans differ from contemporaries in other countries/cultures. Some things that seem quite normal in the UK, like taking a train to work or see friends, are not commonplace in the US. Here are some off the top of my head that may or may not be true, but seem like it to me.

Most Americans will never in their lives...

take a train. (only about 20% of people I know have) Most everyone has. You apparently are talking to people in a dark cavern somewhere.

drive a manual transmission car. (or maybe even be in one) Plenty have.

taste marmite or vegemite. So? There are foods here that will never be tasted by people in other countries. And you forgot to list the tasty wasp. Apparently there are people in some places who eat wasps....a source of protein....

know how to tell temperature in celsius. So? Can the majority of the rest of the world tell temps. in Fahrenheit? Does a college freshman in another country understand weights in ounces?

touch an uncut cock. Circumcision rates are dropping. In certain places of the U.S. there are less circumcisions than leaving the child as is.

use a bidet. (or even know how to use one) Why would I want to? Waste of water and of space. Additional plumbing problem, one more thing to clean. Not worth it.

share a table at a restaurant with strangers. It happens in many fast food joints and even some restaurants where tables are large and the crowds need to be seated. Also to a degree in restaurants which push several tables for 4 next to each other, making each a table for 2 and then there are several people seated to your left and right, as well as your date across from you.

get nude with friends. (skinnydipping, showers or just horsing around -- particularly today's youth)
Possibly. In my youth it was common place and from what I can tell it hasn't ended completely especially in small towns.

I'm not even sure a majority of Americans will have ridden an intercity bus, or any bus, other than a school bus.
Many people commute, many people take a major bus line to visit a relative in a nearby city or town.
Can you think of more things that are commonplace outside the US but that most Americans would not have experienced? Are there some things that people in your culture mostly have not experienced, that most Americans have/do?
Your mention of culture is wild since
the U.S. is a mix of cultures and constantly changing.

When I re read your first line I realized you were basically just letting us know you travel often.

Most Americans will never care about soccer.
Soccer is gaining popularity in the U.S. It's come a long way and has a ways to go but it's getting there.....remember this is the country of Soccer Moms

Yeah, if you actually live in a city, you'd apparently be surprised to know how many people use buses. Trains really aren't so common, but subways are.

Not sure what you mean about the whole temperature thing. Are you saying that americans couldn't read a thermometer? Or can't translate from Fahrenheit to Celsius or vice versa (which is probably true for many people)? Or dont have a general idea of the scale and wouldn't know, for example, exactly how warm 30*C is when they know 30*F to be freezing?

I'll be honest, I have never even heard of a bidet (please don't shoot me, I would normally google it but I'm on my phone right now and opening multiple windows is annoying so I'm sticking with this window so I don't lose my message). And please guys, I'm pretty sure he means that at a table of 4 with 2 seats available next to two strangers, most americans wont do this. In any usual circumstance, I.e. if there were other seats, I probably wouldn't sit with strangers. But I have in the library and the cafes on campus where the seats are limited and you'd have no other choice but to sit with a stranger or two.

And I know of a few people who skinny dipped, although I've known none of them personally.

Really? You gotta add the term North to be accurate. Or South. Maybe refer to a map...?

Or just call it by the correct name of The Americas.

It does though point to what is wrong with most geography. The United States is considered by many to be America.

It is technically to most the countries of America.

In South America there are Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, Venezuela, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Surinam, Guyana, Ecuador, French Guinea, Colombia,

Central America is Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras,

North America is Canada, United States, Mexico

Then there are the West Indies of Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Trinidad&Tobago, Jamaica

(I may have left some out)
